Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Jose Dolores Narvaez was born about 1829 (son of Jose Agustin Narvaez, Alcalde of San Jose and María Josefa Higuera); died on 24 Jun 1910 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California; was buried on 25 Jun 1910 in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, San Jose, Santa Clara, California.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate birth: Jan 1816, San Jose, Santa Clara, California

    Notes:

The 1870 census has him 13 years younger than claimed by the newspaper obituary below. It would hardly be the first time that the age at death of a prominent individual was exaggerated. And an 1829 birth matches well with the 1831 birth of his wife.

From "San Jose's Oldest Resident is Called," San Jose Evening News, 25 Jun 1910:

Jose Dolores Narvaez, one of the founders of the Pueblo of San Jose, has taken his departure from life's duties at the ripe old age of 94.

Mr. Narvaez was at one time a very wealthy man, having made his fortune in trading with the Indians of early California. He was born in an old adobe at Sycamore grove near San Jose.

In Narvaez' day there was no bank and he buried his gold. Later when he wished to get it, his workmen could not find it owing to the failing sight of the owner who could not point out the exact spot of burial. While digging operations were going on, thieves came and found the cache and took the precious hoard with them.

Mr. Narvaez is survived by the following family members: Mrs. B. Ortega, Mrs. D. Berryessa, Mrs. R. Chaboya, Mrs. L. Cantua.

Jose married Maria Agustina Alviso on 13 Jul 1850 in St. Joseph's, San Jose, Santa Clara, California. Maria (daughter of José María de Jesus Alviso, Alcalde of San Jose and Juana Galinda) was born on 2 Feb 1831 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara, California; died in 1872 in Santa Clara County, California; was buried in Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara, Santa Clara, California. Alcalde of San Jose in 1821, he was the last alcalde before San Jose transferred from Spanish to Mexican rule.

"In 1797 eight colonists arrived to begin the ill-fated pueblo of Branciforte (today's Santa Cruz). These included Jose Ignacio Acedo, Jose Maria Arceo, Jose Barbosa, Jose Vicente Moxica, Jose Agustin Narvaez and Jose Antonio Robles, all probably from Jalisco." [Alexander V. King, citation details below]
