According to Descendants of Henry Isaac Newton, in 1862 Newton enlisted "in the Union Army of the Cumberland, 12th Kentucky Cavalry. A corporal by the time the war ends, Newton would be captured in Sweetwater TN during Burnside's abortive campaign to push south and spend nearly a year in Confederate prison."

Newton Mammoth Cave Smoked Names 1866

At the end of the benches past Fat Man's Misery and outside the bathrooms Isaac and his brother John smoked their names in the ceiling in 1866. This act was conflated with his POW status to live in family memory as "Newton was kept prisoner by the Confederates in Mammoth Cave." However, he was captured in eastern Tennessee and the Confederacy never controlled Mammoth Cave and nobody kept prisoners there at any time. Growing up, I heard stories about this from my mom, his great-granddaughter, and in August 1973, at the age of 19, I took a camping trip with two college pals which began at Gettysburg, went thru the Blue Ridge and into W Va, thru the Cumberland Gap into KY and on to Mammoth Cave and finally Owensboro. At Mammoth Cave, I asked at the Park Service information station whether or not there was an index of names in the ceiling of the cave. The question was greeted with derisive laughter, but the senior man said some names were well remembered and I should go ahead and tell them who I was looking for. "Isaac Newton, my great-great grandfather, who is said to have been a POW here during the Civil War," I replied. Lots of head shaking. "No. No POWs were kept here. And I don't remember seeing that name. Anyone else?" No. More head shaking. I turned away from the window, feeling like the whole trip was a stupid waste. A second later, as I took my third or forth step away, I heard a young woman call "Wait...wait..." I stopped and turned. Leaning out the window, a young woman my age, probably an intern. "What name are you looking for?" "Isaac Newton," I called out. She beamed. "You're not going to believe this, but I noticed that name yesterday. It's at the very end of the benches at the bottom of the cave, outside the bathrooms. You get there just after you go through 'Fat Man's Misery.'" And indeed, it was. News of actually finding it and having a location clearly excited my Great Aunt Martine when I arrived in Owensboro. To me, the importance of this story is that oral traditions are extremely important sources of information, and are not to be dismissed, but rather, cajoled into revealing their truths.

Owensboro Messenger, 15 Jan 1893:

Henry R. [sic] Newton died yesterday at his home on the Wayne bridge road of pneumonia aged 57 years. The funeral will take place this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Raphael's Church.

The 1910 US census lists her as a "farmer" and as an "employer".

Her death date has often been given as 16 Dec 1919, or (as on her Find a Grave page) 23 Dec 1919, but the actual date given on her death certificate is simply Dec 1919. The doctor (Edward Barr) states that he has been attending her since 1 Feb 1919 and that 16 Dec 1919 is the last date on which he saw her alive. His signature on the death certificate is dated 22 Dec 1919. Furthermore, the Owensboro Messenger for Tuesday, 23 Dec 1919, says she died "Monday morning", which would indicate the previous day, 22 Dec 1919, the same day her death certificate was signed. The death certificate also states, in agreement with the next day's story in the Messenger, that she is to be buried the next day, 23 Dec, at St. Raphael's.

Owensboro Messenger, Tuesday morning, December 23, 1919:

Mrs Margaret M. Newton, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed women of Daviess county, died Monday morning at 7 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Elder, in the St. Raphael neighborhood, after an illness lasting for several months.

Mrs. Newton was born in Breckenridge County seventy-nine years ago, and her husband died in this county twenty-seven years ago.

The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. James U. Hayden, Mrs. Walter Elder, of the county, and Mrs. Clarence Hayden and Mrs. J. M. O'Bryan, of Owensboro; also three sons, J. S. and L. V. Newton of Daviess county, and S. T. Newton of Jefferson county. The deceased is also survived by fifty-six grandchildren and forty-eight great grandchildren.

The funeral will take place from St. Raphael's Catholic church this morning at 9 o'clock with service by Rev. Father Higgins, with interment in the church cemetery.

Mr. Joseph Lewis, father of Henry J. Lewis of this city, is lying critically ill at the home of Mr. Sexton Newton on the pike. He is not expected to survive many more days, and is in his Eighty-fifth year.

From the Breckinridge (KY) News, March 2, 1898:

Mr. Joseph Lewis, father of Henry J. Lewis who resides in this city, died at the home of Sexton Newton Sunday morning at 6 o'clock. Mr. Lewis had possibly reached the four score mark. He had been in feeble health for some time and the end was expected. His remains were taken to Hardinsburg Monday and interred in the Catholic cemetery.

According to F. X. Flinn, she died in or immediately after childbirth, giving birth to Margaret Matilda. However, some evidence indicates that her daughter Margaret Matilda was born in 1840 or even 1839, not 1842.

Notes:

Hypothesized by several researchers as a son or grandson of Clement Newton who died in St. Mary's County in 1760 and whose will mentions an unborn child. If Archibald is a son, he must have been the unborn child, thus dating his birth back to 1760 or so. But Archibald might also have been a son, rather than a brother, of Gabriel Newton, son of Clement, who died in Washington DC in 1808.

Either way, a Gabriel and an Archibald Newton show up on the 1790 census for Montgomery County, Maryland along with a Clement Newton (presumably Clement Jr.), all living next door to each other. Further, Gabriel Newton married a Henrietta who was the widow of Ignatius Wheatley, and of course our Archibald Newton married a Wheatley.

Archibald married Sarah Wheatley on 20 Sep 1813 in Washington County, Kentucky. Sarah (daughter of John Wheatley and Henrietta) was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

No birth record for her has been found. Her maiden name was recorded in Johnson County, Indiana marriage records when her sons John S. and Thomas Cheshire married their fourth wives. DNA matching via ancestry.com suggests that her parents were David Hollis and Elizabeth Lewis.

The Incredible Life of Vachel John Hinton
Vachel John Hinton, November 12 or 13, 1771 - January 17, 1873

Vachel John Hinton was born on November 12 or 13, 1771 in Maryland to his parents, Benjamin Hinton and Sarah Hopkins-Hinton. In 1791 Vachel arrived in Kentucky and settled in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Tragically, Vachel became completely deaf by the mid-1790s. He communicated for the rest of his life partly by writing on a slate that he carried around with him. Although he could not hear, he never lost the use of speech, but his articulation was much impaired by age.

Mary Nancy Mattingly became his first wife on February 17, 1810 in Breckinridge County. Mary was born on May 10, 1790 in Kentucky to James Barton Mattingly and his wife, Emma. This marriage produced three children, all girls: Ann Nancy Hinton, born on December 26, 1810; Mary Ann Hinton, born in 1812, and Mary Ellen, born on September 13, 1813. Sadly, Mary Nancy Mattingly lost her life on September 26, 1813 when her youngest daughter was not yet two weeks old.

Waiting over three years to remarry, Vachel married Jane Elizabeth Mattingly on January 20, 1817. Ignatius Mattingly and his wife, Sarah Catherine Fowler-Mattingly were her parents. Jane was born in Kentucky about 1792. This marriage would produce a total of eleven children, all born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky: John, born in December, 1817; Sarah M., born in 1825; Joseph H., born on March 25, 1820; James, born on November 14, 1822; Catherine, born in 1824; Austin, born in November, 1825; Nancy, born in 1828; Allen L., born on December 15, 1829; Ezekial, born in 1831; William, born in 1834, and Elizabeth, born in 1836.

On January 17, 1873, Vachel John Hinton died at 102 years of age in the county he had help settle in 1791, that of Breckinridge County, Kentucky. His obituary described him as a devout Catholic who had for a number of years devoted much time to prayer. He was buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery (once called St. Anthony) in Axtel, Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He left seventy-three children and grandchildren.
