"John was summoned in 1287 to attend the military council at Gloucester, had protection for going overseas in 1293, and in 1294 was ordered to join a Wahull muster for service in Gascony. He was summoned on 16 December 1295 for a campaign against the Scots, during which on 30 March 1296 the English army took the Scottish town of Berwick by assault. His arms, or, three crescents gules, were recorded in two rolls of arms from the reign of Edward I. He was dead by 5 April 1296, perhaps while on this campaign."
