• Notes

  In 1567 he was a student of the Inner Temple. B.A., Oxford, 25 Jan 1569. He became a prominent London lawyer. He endowed his birthplace, the parish of Wadhurst, with a bequest to aid the poor there, but this was almost immediately diverted to reduce the taxes in aid of the poor that were levied on the affluent. An angry protest against this state of affairs, by one John Hatley, can be found in the parish register at Worth.
