  • Notes 
    • Emigrated to New England 1637. One of the 28 founders of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1655, 1672, 1675, 1676, 1679, and 1680. Elected Assistant to the Governor of Rhode Island, 1680; held the position for seven of the next ten years. Like several other ancestors of TNH, he was an original settler of Westerly, Rhode Island.

      "On January 30, 1690, Lawton, with five other Assistants wrote to T. M. William and Mary a congratulatory letter upon their accession to the throne, and gave an account of the affairs of the colony, with particular mention of the deposition of Governor Andros."
