Notes - First in Newbury, then Salisbury. In 1659, he and his family were the first European settlers of Nantucket, accompanied by Edward Starbuck and the then 12-year-old Isaac Coleman.
The reputed circumstances of his relocation to Nantucket are the subject of John Greenleaf Whittier's 1841 poem "The Exiles."
