  From a display at the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, Ireland: "Donegal-born Holmes settled as the minister in Chilmark, Massachusetts. He published books and his diary is a valuable source of local historical information. Holmes's son Robert was a sea captain, and through him Holmes encouraged hundreds of Ulster-Scots to emigrate to America. In 1716, Robert Holmes married Benjamin Franklin's sister Mary."
