  He was a linen draper of Sudbury, Suffolk. He was probably descended in some manner from William Weld of Eaton, Cheshire, sheriff of London in 1352, whose coat of arms (azure, a fesse nebulé between three crescents ermine) was identical to that used by the early New England Weld family.
