Notes - He was a Huguenot. Fleeing his native France, he first took refuge in Mannheim, where he married Catherine Planscon. In about 1660 they emigrated to New Amsterdam and settled at what is now Kingston. In the 1663 outbreak of warfare between settlers and natives, Catherine and their three children were kidnapped, but rescued by Capt. Martin Kregier and his command. In 1666 he purchased about 36,000 acres in the Walkill Valley and was among the founders of the town of New Paltz, situated there. He later returned to Kingston, where he died, probably in the late 1670s.
