Notes - He is identified in several sources as a son or grandson of Richard Cutting and Ellen Fynce of Ardleigh, Essex, but Dean Crawford Smith (citation details below) shows how neither of these are likely.
He was a master mariner, commander of multiple ships that crossed the Atlantic. The earliest record of him shows him in command of the Francis bound for New England out of Ipswich, England in April 1634 with some eighty passengers on board.
He brought his wife and children to Watertown in 1636. In Newbury by 1639, Charlestown 1651 where he was styled gentleman. By 1656 the family returned to Newbury.
His grandson the Rev. Nicholas Noyes oversaw, on Tuesday, July 19, 1692, the judicial murders for "witchcraft" of Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Wilde, Elizabeth Howe, and TNH ancestor Susanna (North) Martin.
