    • Later called de Menteith. Earl of Menteith.

"[O]ne of the nobles who (5 Feb. 1283/4) supported the right of succession of the Maid of Norway to the crown of Scotland. In 1286 he and his younger brother John, with their father, entered into a bond with other supporters of Bruce. He was among the barons du Realme de Escoce at Brigham, 17 Mar. 1289/90. As Alexander de Menteith, s. of the Earl of Menteith, he swore.fealty to Edward I at Norham, 12 June 1291. In Feb. 1292/3, as Sir Alexander de Menteth, Kt., he had a grant of the wardship of certain lands. In the spring of 1296 he was one of 7 Scottish earls who made a raid into England, and vainly besieged Carlisle, and, on 28 Apr. following, was made prisoner at Dunbar, whence he was sent to the Tower. He did homage to Edward I, 27 July 1296, nominally at Elgin. In Sep. he was de?nitely ranged with the English, and in June 1297 was in England." [Complete Peerage, citation details below]
