Notes - He was a slaveowner — the 1850 census shows that he owned at least one black male slave aged 20 years — and, interestingly, a Republican. In 1875 he was a delagate to the Republican county convention at Frederick on the 6th of October.
From 1876 until his death he was the superintendent of Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown. He and his wife are commemorated in a stained-glass window in that church. His headstone indicates that he "fell asleep" on 7 May 1896, which we always find alarming.
