  She appears in the 1880 census of San Jose, with her six-year-old daughter Margaret and her four-year-old son J. Edward, as Mary Berryessa, 24, widowed, born in California, both parents born in California. That her birth surname was Narvaez comes from the abstract of her daughter Margaret's 1949 death record. The 1900 census of San Jose shows a Mary, born Aug 1858, married for 11 years to a Daniel Berryessa, born Jul 1858, with daughter Maggie born Jun 1874, son Eddie born Aug 1877, and daughter Rose born Apr 1891. Given the close match of names and dates for Margaret/Maggie and son J. Edward/Eddie, it would appear that the widowed Mrs. Mary Berryessa of the 1880 census subsequently married a second man named Berryessa, bringing her daughter and son into the new family. (Daniel Berryessa need not have been closely related to her first Berryessa husband—the Berryessa family of Northern California, descended from the Basque Berrellezas, is and was extensive enough to have its own Wikipedia page. Today it lends its surname to an entire neighborhood in north San Jose.) As "Mrs. D. Berryessa" she is listed, in the 25 Jun 1910 San Jose Evening News obituary for her father Jose Dolores Narvaez, as one of his surviving family members.
