Notes - Said by some to have been born in or near London; said by his Wikitree entry, without obvious proof, to have been the John Hollis baptised 10 Jul 1737 in Risely, Bedfordshire, a son of John Hollis and Lydia Dickins. That he was born in England seems clear from his gravestone inscription.
He served several terms of enlistment in the North Carolina militia during the Revolution, under Gen. Griffith Rutherford and others. He is said to have on one occasion been captured and then escaped. After the war he was an early member of the Jersey Settlement Baptist Church in Rowan County, mentioned several times in their records as an elder. With his wife and their youngest son Micajah, he emigrated to Tennessee in 1808-09.
