His origins are unknown, but in 1968 John G. Hunt (citation details below) pointed out that (1) the William Russell of Cambridge, Massachusetts was a carpenter with a wife named Martha, (2) on 26 May 1636, at St. Stephens Church, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, William Russell, carpenter of Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, married Martha Davyes of Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, a surety being Walter Davyes of Bovingdon, and (3) William Russell of Cambridge, Massachusetts had a grandson (through his son Joseph) named Walter.
