He was born in 1533, and received three degrees at Oxford University, namely B.A., 1542, B.C.L., 1554, and Doctor of Canon Law, 1565. He was Fellow of All Souls' College, Oxford; also an original Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, 1571. He was appointed Dean of St. Asaph 4 April 1559 (deprived 3 Nov. following)."       "His name in the Welsh form was John Lloyd ap David Lloyd, and he was claimed to have been of the family line known as the Griffiths of Cefn Amwleh in Llyn, Caernarvonshire, Wales, also given as Cevn Amwlch in Lleyn. He was said also to have resided at some time at Harteshorne, Derbyshire, England. The Griffiths of Cefn Amwlch, Penllech, Llyn, 'claimed descent from Rhys ap Tewdr Mawr, prince of Deheubartha, through Trahaern Goch, Lord of Cymydmaen but the first of the family to be definite ly described as of Cefn Amwlch is one Dafydd Fychan who WAS alive in 1481' (DWB 288)."
