Notes - Findmypast.co.uk shows a George Withington who made his will at Atherton, Lancashire (about ten miles from Leigh) on 28 Apr 1614. We haven't seen the will, so we can't be sure that this is the right George Withington, or whether Findmypast's transcribed date is correct. In our experience it's not unusual for Findmypast's transcriptions to mix up the date of a will with its date of probate.
ancestry.com has original ledgers for St. Mary the Virgin in Leigh which show a George Withington "de Atherton" being buried there in April 1614. Ancestry transcribes the date as 2 Apr 1614, but we can't see a clear indication of the specific date. It does seem likely that this burial record corresponds to the George Withington whose will is listed on findmypast.co.uk.
Confusingly, the St. Mary the Virgin burial ledgers on ancestry.com also include two lines in April 1612 which appear to include the name George Withington, one on (what would appear to be) 1 Apr 1612, and one on 10 Apr 1612 which Ancestry transcribes as "widow of George Withington" but which we can barely read at all.
Someone with more experience than we have at reading scrawly 17th-century handwriting might want to look at those ledgers. And it would be great to get a copy or transcription of that 28 Apr 1614 will.
