Notes - Educated at, probably, Oxford, and definitely Gray's Inn, he became a Carthusian monk. In 1535 the majority of London's Carthusians refused to take an oath affirming the king's supremacy, by Chauncy did so. Surviving the persecutions that ensued, he went to Bruges, returning for Queen Mary's brief reign but back to Bruges after 1558.
Always haunted by his failure to resist the oath of supremacy, he wrote several works about his order, mentioning his own failing.
