Notes - He is recorded as the son of a James Phillips, but we find no evidence that, as claimed on Wikitree, he was a son of the James Phillips who was born 14 Nov 1727 at Middletown, Rhode Island and who married there, 19 Mar 1752, Alice Brown, born there 20 Jun 1737. Jane Fletcher Fiske's "A Family Discovered for William and Christiana (Barker) Phillips of Newport, Rhode Island" (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 143:221, 1989) sets forth all known records of that couple and their children, and not only is no Asaph mentioned, but also that couple had no known association with the town of Foster where this Asaph Phillips was born.
