  Beekman Precinct Clerk in 1756 and 1758; overseer of the poor, 1757-58; assessor, 1758. He was a merchant and property-owner of Poughkeepsie. In 1761 he was dismissed from the Society of Friends for "Drinking to excess, Fighting, unbecoming language, neglecting to attend meetings."
