  • Notes
    • His birth date is derived from his gravestone, which says he died 7 Dec 1871 aged "64y 11m 27d".

He arrived at New York on 7 Oct 1839 on the Francis out of Amsterdam. This does not seem to have been primarily a passenger vessel; the arrival documents list only two other passengers. He is described as a merchant from Denmark, age 33 years 2 months. Note that this would place his birth in August 1806 rather than December.

The ancestry.com database of abstracts of arrival records "New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1850" gives the same information as the above, except that the vessel is called the Barque Francis.

He was naturalized a US citizen in Fairfield County, Ohio on 30 Oct 1844.

He applied for a passport on 20 Mar 1850. The application says that he had been a merchant in Ohio for twelve years and a naturalized US citizen for four. Both of these numbers are slightly off — as shown above, he can't have been in Ohio for twelve years when he arrived in the US only eleven years earlier. And he had been a US citizen for about six years, not four.

He was appointed postmaster of Canal Winchester in Franklin County, Ohio on 14 Apr 1854.
