    • "[A]ssumed the name of Mowbray. Was, when a boy, at the battle of the Standard, 1137; went with Louis VII of France to the Holy Land 1147; rebelled against Henry III 1147, and had his castles of Thirsk and Kirkby Malzeard taken and destroyed; went again to the Holy Land; founded Byland Abbey."       "Roger de Mowbray; helped defeat invading Scots at Battle of the Standard 1138; supported King Stephen in period of the Anarchy, fighting on his behalf at the Battle of Lincoln Feb. 1140/1; joined Second Crusade 1147; rebelled against Henry II 1173 and allegedly escaped to Scotland following rebels' defeat, but submitted 1174; again went on Crusade 1186, captured by Saracens 1187 at the Battle of Hittin but ransomed; married Alice, daughter of Walter de Gant and widow of Ilbert de Lacy, and died 1188 in the Holy Land when on the point of returning to England."
