Notes - In a Bureau of Pensions questionnaire answered by Louis Joubert on 21 Mar 1915, he was asked "If your present wife was married before her marriage to you, state the name of her former husband, the date of such marriage, and the date and place of his death or divorce, and state whether he ever rendered any military or naval service, and, if so, give name of the organization in which he served. If she was married more than once before her marriage to you, let your answer include all former husbands." His answer was "present wife's first husband was name [illegible, single name beginning with a capital J], don't know. he is dead. no." He also states that as of the present date, he and his wife are "separated by mutual covenant."
The Missouri death certificate for Eliza Joubert calls her a "widow", not the first time we've seen this on the death certificate of a woman who, at the time of her death, was separated from her still-living husband. It also says that she died of influenza, and that her usual residence was Oroville, Illinois. The informant was Ernest Joubert, presumably her grandson who was born to George Joubert and Lydia Sorrels in 1898.
From "People You Know", Decatur (Illinois) Daily Review, 29 Feb 1916, p. 11:
Mr. & Mrs. C J McCormick have returned to their home in Forrest. They were called to Holcomb, Mo., Feb 16 by the sudden death of Mrs. McCormick's mother Mrs. Eliza Joubert.
