Notes - Emigrated on the Mayflower, 1620. Removed to Duxbury 1632. He was a cooper, and a signer of the Mayflower Compact. A protagonist of Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish", which may or may not be grounded in actual events.
He was hired at the port of Southampton, but despite the strenuous efforts of many researchers over many years, absolutely nothing has been proved about his English origins.
Deputy Governor of Plymouth, 7 Mar 1665 and 30 Oct 1667. Treasurer 3 Jun 1656, 3 Jun 1657, 1 Jun 1658. Council of War 27 Sep 1642, 10 Oct 1643, 2 Jun 1646, 6 Apr 1653, 12 May 1653, 1 Jun 1658, 2 Apr 1667. Committee to revise laws 4 Jun 1645, 3 Jun 1657. Committee on Kennebec trade 3 Mar 1645, 7 Jun 1648, 8 Jun 1649, 5 Mar 1656. He was literate. "Although there is no direct evidence for his literary and educational attainments, his extensive public service, including especially his appointments as colony treasurer and to committees on revising the laws, certainly indicates that he must have been well-educated."
