  • Notes
    • He came to New England in 1629, in advance of the Winthrop Fleet, and was one of the founders of Salem, Massachusetts. After a few years, he became a follower of Roger Williams, and was in due course banished from the Bay Colony and removed to Rhode Island, where he was one of the founders of Providence. He spent the rest of his life there in a variety of public offices and roles.

Surviving records suggest that he was known as a skilled hunter in his native England, and that he continued to practice this in the New World, both in order to provide food and also to drive away wolves.

A monument to him was raised in Providence in 1840; it contains several errors of fact. He never bore the title Colonel; there is no evidence that he came from Bristol in England; and he did not arrive in 1631 on the Lion with Roger Williams.
