"In several letters to the courts of Western Europe Hugues reported on the first siege of Constantinople in 1203 and finally the conquest of the city in 1204. His letter of 18 July 1203 addressed to Hendrik I, duke of Brabant was the first report of this crusade to reach the West. At the coronation of Baudouin VI-IX as emperor of Constantinople Hugues acted as sword-bearer." [Leo van de Pas]
