"[A]mong the 'knights and barons of the realm of Scotland' who swore fealty to King Edward I in 1291, named 1296 in a charter as Sir John Steward, knight, brother of Sir James, formerly Steward of Scotland, after joining the Scottish resistance, he was slain during the destruction of Sir William Wallace's force by the army of the English king. […] He is often called 'of Bonkyl' in secondary sources. However, this is incorrect, as he died before his father-in-law, Sir Alexander Bonkyl, and therefore did not possess that barony."
