  He grew up in Alford, Lincolnshire, where he was warden of the church in 1620-21. He arrived in Boston on the Griffin, 18 Sep 1634, with his widowed mother; his wife; his wife's younger sister Catherine Marbury, about 24; and his and his wife's ten children. Also on that voyage were his brother Samuel; his sister Mary, wife of the Rev. John Wheelwright; and the Reverends Zachariah Symmes and John Lothropp. "Among their fellow passengers were the Rev. John Lathrop, afterward the first minister of Scituate, and the Rev. Zachariah Symmes, who became pastor of the church at Charlestown. [Gov. John] Winthrop tells us that one of the chief amusements in the long voyages of the time was listening to sermons, and that often three long homilies were delivered within the twenty-four hours. Though no diary of the Griffin's voyage has been preserved, it is not likely that Messrs. Lathrop and Symmes were exceptions to this homiletic custom of their brethren, so it is probable that they delivered themselves daily of the orthodoxy of the day, tinctured, as was the custom of our Puritan forbears, with their individual opinions. Another custom of those primitive times was the discussion by the laity of the points of doctrine raised in such sermons. In these discussions, in which the ministers also took part, we may easily imagine that Mrs. Hutchinson was not backward, and as, according to contemporary evidence, she was of a nimble and comprehensive wit, we may conceive that she sometimes got the better of her antagonists. However this may be, it is certain that these ministers, and especially Mr. Symmes, became greatly prejudiced against her and that Symmes carried his animosity so far as to attempt, after the arrival in Boston, to exclude her from admission to the church." ["The Tragedy of Anne Hutchinson", citation details below] Following his wife's banishment he removed with her and most of their family to Rhode Island, where he was at first treasurer of the new colony of Portsmouth, alongside William Coddington who served as Judge, a title meaning, in effect, governor or chief magistrate. A controversy compelled Coddington to relocate in 1639, establishing the town of Newport, and Hutchinson became Judge, in which office he died.
