    His attempt to "pacify" northern Jutland came to an abrupt end in the town of Randers when a group of Danes led by Niels Ebbesen entered his bedroom, blocked the exit, and cut off his head over the end of the bed. For this, Ebbesen is remembered as a national hero in Denmark. A statue of him stands in front of the old town hall in Randers.
