    Notes:

Many genealogical sources identify this Ebel de Grandison, who was husband of a daughter of Amadeus I of Geneva, as a son of another Ebel de Grandison (claimed to have died about 1173) and his wife Jordane, the older Ebel a son of Barthélemy de Grandison who died about 1158, and whose wife is said to be unknown.

David Williams (citation details below) points out that model traces back to the research of the 19th-century Swiss historian Louis de Charrière, who postulated that Barthélemy's son Ebel could not have lived much beyond 1177 and that therefore the Ebel who appears in documents after that date must have been a son. This hypothesis was rejected in the mid-20th century by Swiss historian and genealogist Olivier Dessemontet, who argued that evidence for an additional Ebel was nonexistent, and further pointed out that Charrière had based his argument on his misunderstanding of a particular Latin text. Williams's piece, cited below, takes stock of the de Grandison pedigree in light of this and argues convincingly that Jordane was the wife of Barthélemy, not of Barthélemy's son Ebel, and that Barthélemy's son Ebel and supposed grandson Ebel were in fact a single individual who lived from about 1144 to the mid-1230s.

    Notes:

Earl of March. Earl of Ulster.

    From Wikipeia:

An infant at the death of his father, Edmund, as a ward of the crown, was placed by Edward III of England under the care of William of Wykeham and Richard Fitzalan, 10th Earl of Arundel.

The position of the young earl, powerful on account of his possessions and hereditary influence in the Welsh marches, was rendered still more important by his marriage on 24 August 1369 at the age of 17 to the 14-year-old Philippa, the only child of the late Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, the second son of Edward III.

Lionel's late wife, Elizabeth, had been daughter and heiress of William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, and Lionel had himself been created Earl of Ulster before his marriage. Edmund inherited the title Earl of Ulster on Lionel's death.

Therefore, the Earl of March not only represented one of the chief Anglo-Norman lordships in Ireland in right of his wife Philippa, but Philippa's line was also the second most senior line of descent in the succession to the crown, after Edward, the Black Prince and his son, King Richard II of England. John of Gaunt, younger brother of Prince Edward, had become the 1st Duke of Lancaster and thus the source of the House of Lancaster's claim to the throne.

This marriage had, therefore, far-reaching consequences in English history, ultimately giving rise to the claim of the House of York to the crown of England contested in the Wars of the Roses between the Yorks and the Lancasters; Edward IV being descended from the second adult son of Edward III as great-great-grandson of Philippa, countess of March, and in the male line from Edmund of Langley, the first Duke of York and the fourth adult son of Edward III.

Edmund Mortimer's son Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March would become heir presumptive to the English crown during the reign of Richard II.

Mortimer, now styled Earl of March and Ulster, became Marshal of England in 1369, and was employed in various diplomatic missions during the next following years. He was a member of the committee appointed by the Peers to confer with the Commons in 1373 - the first instance of such a joint conference since the institution of representative parliaments on the question of granting supplies for John of Gaunt's war in France.

He participated in the opposition to Edward III and the court party, which grew in strength towards the end of the reign, taking the popular side and being prominent in the Good Parliament of 1376 among the lords who supported the Prince of Wales and opposed the Court Party and John of Gaunt. The Speaker of the House of Commons in this parliament was March's steward, Peter de la Mare, (1294-1387 of Little Hereford, Hereford), who firmly withstood John of Gaunt in stating the grievances of the Commons, in supporting the impeachment of several high court officials, and in procuring the banishment of the king's mistress, Alice Perrers. March was a member of the administrative council appointed by the same parliament after the death of Edward, the Black Prince to attend the king and advise him in all public affairs.

Following the end of the Good Parliament its acts were reversed by John of Gaunt, March's steward was jailed, and March himself was ordered to inspect Calais and other remote royal castles as part of his duty as Marshal of England. March chose instead to resign the post.

On the accession of Richard II, a minor, in 1377, the Earl became a member of the standing council of government; though as husband of the heir-presumptive to the crown he wisely abstained from claiming any actual administrative office. The richest and most powerful person in the realm was, however, the king's uncle John of Gaunt, whose jealousy led March to accept the office of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1379. March succeeded in asserting his authority in eastern Ulster, but failed to subdue the O'Neills farther west. Proceeding to Munster to put down the turbulent southern chieftains, March was killed at Cork on 27 December 1381. He was buried in Wigmore Abbey, of which he had been a benefactor, and where his wife Philippa was also interred.

Edmund married Philippe of Clarence about May 1368 in Reading, Berkshire, England. Sir Walter Faucomberge died on 1 September 1415 (CIPM, vol. 20, no. 298-9). Unfortunately the ipm of Walter does not mention his heirs, and neither does his will (Early Lincoln Wills, 120) so the trail breaks at this point, but it seems likely to me that this Sir Walter Faucomberge was the father of Sir Roger Faucomberge (d. Jun 1455), Isabel, wife of Gerard Sothill and Constance wife of Anthony Nuthill. " [John Watson, citation details below.]

Burgess for Bramber. Burgess for Thetford. Knight of the shire for Norfolk. Vice Admiral. Treasurer for the Army in France.

    From the History of Parliament:

Rarely on good terms with his neighbours, above all the Pastons, Clere was not infrequently in the Star Chamber, where one complainant criticized his 'covetous appetite and ungodly disposition'. At least in Henry VIII's time he could treat such attacks the more lightly in that he enjoyed the patronage of the Howards: the 3rd Duke of Norfolk had been overseer of his father's will and his younger brother Thomas, a servant of the Earl of Surrey, was to be commemorated in one of Surrey's sonnets after dying from wounds received when he saved the earl's life in France in 1545. It was during this phase of Clere's career that he attended his first two Parliaments as Member for Bramber, one of the Howard boroughs in Sussex. He was one of a group around Surrey arrested during the second session of the Parliament of 1542 for eating flesh in Lent.

If it was as a courtier and a dependant of the Howards that he first came to public notice, it was as a naval captain and an administrator that Clere made his name. Early in 1548 he commanded a patrol in the North Sea and two years later he served in the Channel. His service at sea commended him to the admiral John Dudley, Viscount Lisle, whom in 1546 he accompanied to France to negotiate peace. Presumably he served under Dudley's successor as admiral, Thomas, Baron Seymour of Sudeley, but nothing has come to light about his part in the Scottish war. Clere's plundering of West Somerton church perhaps helped to foment Ket's rebellion during 1548: he answered the Marquess of Northampton's call for support from Norfolk gentlemen and after Northampton's replacement by Dudley, then Earl of Warwick, he assisted in restoring order. Dudley rewarded him with lands said to have been promised to him by Henry VIII and with the treasurership of the army stationed in northern France until the surrender of Boulogne in 1550. His closeness to Dudley probably accounts for his Membership of the Parliament of March 1553 as much as his friendship with the leading resident at Thetford, Richard Fulmerston. During the succession crisis Clere seems to have declared for Lady Jane Grey and to have prevented a military force from Great Yarmouth from reaching Mary. When the tide turned in Mary's favour his arms were impounded but he is not known to have been imprisoned. […]

[H]is appointment as vice-admiral at Portsmouth in the following year shows that he was regarded as politically reliable as well as professionally competent. His first mission, to escort Charles V on his voyage to retirement in Spain, brought him a gold chain from the ex-emperor, but his second was to prove fatal. In July 1557 he was given command of a fleet against Scotland which on 21 Aug. was surprised by an enemy force in the Orkneys, and in the engagement which followed he was drowned. Following his death the Council ordered an inquiry to be held into alleged disorders committed by his men in churches and religious houses in Scotland.

    Notes:

"His [Sir John Paston's] financial embarrassment was doubtless eased by the marriage of his son and heir, William, to Sir Henry Heydon's daughter Bridget, whose marriage portion was probably 500 marks. The wedding was already in sight when Sir Henry informed John Paston of the conclusion of the dispute with William Paston: 'How yee and myn ladie, and in what sylk or clooth yee will have these tweyn yong innocentes maried jnne, iff it shuld be purveyed at London to send me word, or ellys at Norwich, as it shall please you and myn ladie ther-affter I shall applie me; for it must bee ordyrd be you in the yong husbondes name.' 1489 seems the year in which to place the end of the controversy and the marriage, as on 10 February 1489 Margery, in writing to John, refers to 'my brodyre Heydon.'" A courtier and survivor at the court of Henry VIII, perhaps best described as a combination of Littlefinger and the Vicar of Bray.

Sheriff of Wiltshire, 1522-23. Esquire of the body to Henry VIII by 1522. Knight of the shire for Wiltshire, 1529 and 1539. Burgess for Wilton in 1542.

"[H]e was an astute courtier who served in the royal household (he was vice-chamberlain to all save the first of Henry VIII's wives) and on military expeditions to the Scottish borders and France, as well as in local affairs. He sat in the parliaments of 1529 and 1539 as a knight of the shire for Wiltshire, and in that of 1542 as a burgess for Wilton. Probably during his association with Thomas Cromwell he began the family tradition of strong protestantism, and at the dissolution he gained much former monastic land in and near Wiltshire, especially the site of Stanley Abbey and sixteen of its manors. He built an imposing manor house at Bromham, which was said to be almost as large as the king's new court at Whitehall, and which remained the family's chief residence until demolished during the civil war. In the summer of 1546 Lady Denny (and by extension her husband) was one of the court protestants whom religious conservatives tried to incriminate through accusations wrung from Anne Askew, a distant relative of Joan's uncle Sir Gawain Carew; Anne would admit only that Lady Denny's servant had brought her money, and Sir Anthony survived as a leading figure among Seymour's associates at the close of the reign." Many sources, including the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, have her as a daughter of Philip Champernoun, but Brice Claggett (citation details below) and Neil P. Thompson argued convincingly that he has to have been, instead, her first husband, after whom she married John Astley.

As "Kat" Champernoun she was governess to the young Lady Elizabeth and, in the words of Brice Clagett (citation details below), "is credited with providing her with the foundation of her excellent education. On Elizabeth's accession in 1558 Kat, now Mrs. Astley, became chief gentlewoman of the privy chamber, and was one of the Queen's closest confidantes until her death in 1565."

    Other Events:

    • Alternate death: 3 Jun 1606, London, England

    Notes:

Burgess for Thetford 1557-58, 1562-63. Burgess for Grampound 1571. Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk 1567-68. Sheriff of Norfolk 1580-81.

    From the History of Parliament:

Though a younger son, Clere succeeded to an extensive patrimony on the north-east coast of Norfolk, being licensed to enter his lands on 22 Feb. 1558. In May of that year he purchased further property at Wymondham, and in 1561, on the death of his great-uncle Sir James Boleyn he inherited Blickling, which he made his chief seat. On the death of his father-in-law (Sir) Richard Fulmerston in 1567, Clere and his wife came into possession of most of his extensive estates in and around Thetford as well as inheriting most of his personal property.

Thus, after 1567 Clere was one of the greatest landowners in Norfolk, appearing in 1588 on Lord Burghley's list of 'knights of great possessions' able to support a peerage. He was a second cousin to the Queen and to Lord Hunsdon, and brother-in-law to Walter Haddon, the master of requests. His connexion with the Duke of Norfolk through his father-in-law Fulmerston, the Duke's servant, caused him to be among those questioned on Norfolk's arrest in October 1569, and in September 1571 he and others were ordered to take an inventory of the Duke's goods at Kenninghall. In 1570 he was made collector in Norfolk of the forced loan. This inevitably made him unpopular with his fellow gentry, and gave rise to probably well-founded accusations of fraud and extortion. He was also in conflict with his manorial tenants, and at loggerheads with the Thetford corporation. He had to attend upon the Privy Council for a while after the forced loan episode, but he never lost the Council's confidence. In 1578 he entertained the Queen during her Norfolk progress, 'worthily feasted' her retinue, and was knighted by the Queen at Norwich. In 1583 he signed a petition on behalf of certain puritan ministers and four years later was noted by the bishop of Norwich as a 'favourer of religion'.

Clere's election at Thetford to the Parliaments of 1558 and 1563 was due to the local influence of his father-in-law, Fulmerston. Clere succeeded to Fulmerston's land in 1567 and what made him resort to Grampound for a seat in 1571 is not evident, nor is it clear who was his patron there. Possibly there was a court connexion with the 2nd Earl of Bedford. Clere's committee work concerned the continuance of statutes (20 Mar. 1563), priests disguised as servants (1 May 1571), and tillage and the navy (25 May 1571). He spoke on the treasons bill (9 Apr. 1571), the anonymous diarist commenting, 'Mr. Clere of Norfolk, a gentleman of great possessions, made hereupon a staggering speech: his conclusion I did not conceive'. Of another speech, again on a religious topic (11 Apr.), he wrote 'such was my ill hap I could not understand what reason he made'. D'Ewes records Clere as speaking on the bill for Bristol, also on 11 Apr. In the discussion on Strickland's case on 20 Apr., he defended the prerogative of the Crown.

In 1572 Clere decided to try for the county seat, Sir Thomas Cornwallis reporting just before the election that Clere 'leaveth no stone untouched that may further his part', and that 'a great number of the shire' were 'evil affected towards him'. Unsuccessful, he wrote a series of letters to Richard Southwell, whom he had addressed as 'loving cousin and friend' when canvassing support beforehand, describing his 'found falsehood', and contrasting Southwell's 'overt action in so great an assembly' with his 'former pretended opinion'.

In October 1586 he and his fellow deputy lieutenant Sir William Heydon were ordered by the Privy Council to ensure that at the new election of knights of the shire 'fit men may be chosen, known to be well affected to religion and the present estate', and Clere wrote to his friend, Bassingbourne Gawdy, suggesting that he stand, adding that if he himself were not incapacitated by a rupture, he 'should be willing to be with you there'. The Norfolk gentry at this time were divided. In the north of the county Clere and Sir William Heydon, after initial quarrels over the rights of Clere's second wife to the Heydon manor of Saxlingham, had united against Nathaniel Bacon, the Knyvet and Wyndham families and others of their neighbours. Soon after the 1586 election they apparently persuaded the lord lieutenant, Hunsdon, to replace Sir Thomas Knyvet by their friend Sir Arthur Heveningham as a deputy lieutenant, and had several of their opponents turned off the commission of the peace. During the next few years Clere can generally be found on the side of Heveningham in the latter's quarrels with the Bacon faction over such contentious matters as the organisation of county musters.

Clere's eldest son Edward, already in 1585 'in peril divers ways of imprisonment and shame', was accused in the next reign of sheltering a seminary priest and from 1606 spent much of his life in prison. Clere therefore did his best to keep his property out of his eldest son's hands, though he could not break the entail on the Fulmerston estate. By various settlements and by his will, made in April 1605, he divided the rest between the younger sons, Sir Francis and Robert, and his grandson Henry. Most of the land eventually reverted to Henry, who became a baronet in 1620 and died s.p. in 1622. Clere's will contained bequests to other relatives, and arranged for the foundation of a fellowship and scholarship at St. John's, Cambridge. Most of the personal property was left to the widow, the sole executrix, who had a life interest in Blickling. One of the two supervisors was his 'old well tried friend' Dru Drury. Clere died in London on 3 June 1606, and was buried at Blickling.

"[F]orfeited the Angus Douglas, executed Border reivers, at times went incognito among his people, popular and licentious." [The Ancestry of Charles II, King of England (citation details below)]

James V of Scotland, direct ancestor of TWK, is by far the most recent crowned head to be the direct ancestor of any of this database's root individuals. Through him, TWK is documentably descended from approximately 2500 more minor gentry, two-bit aristocrats, and forgotten royalty than either TNH or JTS, the next two in sheer quantity of known ancestors. Through the wives of James V's grandfather James III and his great-grandfather James II, plus James V's umbilical great-grandmother Jacquetta of Luxembourg, a great number of these TWK ancestors lived in central and eastern Europe. Through James V's mother Margaret Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, TWK is descended from many of the dramatis personae of Shakespeare's history plays and many of the major players in the Wars of the Roses. Finally, through Margaret Tudor's paternal great-grandfather Owen ap Marududd ap Tudur, TWK is descended from dozens if not hundreds of Welsh persons with brain-challenging names like Cynwrig ab Iorwerth ap Gwgon ab Idnerth ab Edryd ab Inethan ab Iasedd ap Carwed ap Marchudd ap Cynan.

Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1565-66.

"He played little part in national affairs but took a prominent role in the government and political life of his native county and was known as a careful administrator and a 'just and painstaking magistrate' [...] A supporter of Edmund Freake, bishop of Norwich (1575–84), Paston was involved in the bitter conflict between the bishop and the puritans for control of the chancellorship of the diocese in 1578. He was described by Bishop Scrambler as an 'observer of law' which has been taken to mean that his religious views were either conformist Church of England or impartial (Smith, 214). In 1597 he moved to the new house which his uncle, Sir Clement Paston, had built at Oxnead. Known for his liberality, hospitality and benefactions, Paston is chiefly remembered for the founding and endowment of North Walsham grammar school (the Paston School), in 1606." Notes:

Arrived in New England sometime in the 1630s. One of TNH's four "gateway ancestors," albeit one about whom the scholarly consensus has been very much in flux. That the William Wentworth of New England was the man baptized in Alford seems extremely probable. That the man baptized in Alford had many gentry and aristocratic ancestors seems indisputable. That he had a provable "royal ancestry" was long at issue. In The American Genealogist in 2018, Booth, Reed, and Taylor (citation details below) indicated that his descent from William "the Lion", king of Scotland, currently shown in this database, is invalid. They said this would be demonstrated in an upcoming article. That article has yet to appear, but in the January/April 2020 issue of TAG (actually published March 2021), the same authors showed proof for a solid descent from Henry I:

    Henry I = unknown mistress
Robert de Caen = Maud Fitz Robert
William Fitz Robert = Hawise of Leicester
Amicia of Gloucester = Richard de Clare
William de Braose = Maud de Clare

    Agnes Hawley = Patrick Skipwith
    Margaret Skipwith = Bernard Angevine
    Michael Angevine = Joan Towthby
    Jane Angevine = John Williamson
    Katherine Williamson = Robert Marbury
    William Marbury = Agnes Lenton
    Katherine Marbury = Christopher Wentworth
    William Wentworth = Susanna Carter
    William Wentworth (1616-1697)

-- the critical element being their demonstration that Agnes Hawley, known to be a daughter of Thomas Hawley, was in fact his daughter by his first wife, Margaret Brewse.

"William Wentworth (1616-1697) was a follower of John Wheelwright, and an early settler of New Hampshire. Coming from Alford in Lincolnshire, he likely came to New England with Wheelwright in 1636, but no records are found of him in Boston. When Wheelwright was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his role in the Antinomian Controversy, he established the settlement of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Wentworth followed him there and then to Wells, Maine. After Wheelwright left Wells for Hampton, New Hampshire, Wentworth went to Dover, New Hampshire, and this is where he lived the remainder of his life. He was the proprietor of a sawmill, and held several town offices, but is most noted for being an elder in his Dover church for nearly 40 years. He had 11 children with two wives, and has numerous descendants, including many of great prominence." [Wikipedia]

He was a signer of the Exeter Combination.

His near descendants included his grandson John Wentworth, Lieutenant Governor of New Hampshire 1717-1730, and New Hampshire governors Benning Wentworth (governor 1741-1767) and Sir John Wentworth (governor 1767-1775); also John Wentworth, Speaker of the New Hampshire House 1771-1778.

    1st Earl of Orkney.

    From Wikipedia:

Robert Stewart, Knt., 1st Earl of Orkney and Lord of Zetland (Shetland) (1533 – 4 February 1593) was a recognized illegitimate son of James V, King of Scotland, and his mistress Eupheme Elphinstone.

In 1539 Robert was made Commendator of Holyrood Abbey, and Commendator of Charlieu Abbey in France by 1557. On 9 February 1560 he testified against the Hamilton Duke of Châtellerault and Earl of Arran, and the Protestant Lords of the Congregation to James MacGill and John Bellenden of Auchnoule. They were collecting evidence for Henri Cleutin and Jacques de la Brosse, the French advisors of his step-mother Mary of Guise who planned to have the Hamiltons charged with treason against his half-sister, Mary, Queen of Scots and France. Robert himself had signed some of the letters that were to be cited as evidence.

He was knighted as Sir Robert Stewart of Strathdon on 15 May 1565, as part of marriage celebrations of Mary, Queen of Scots and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. In 1581 he was named, by James VI, the 1st Earl in a second creation of the Earldom of Orkney. The new earldom replaced a short-lived Dukedom of Orkney, which had been awarded in 1567 by Mary, Queen of Scots, to her notorious third husband James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. This dukedom was forfeit later that same year after Mary was forced to abdicate and Bothwell was charged with treason. Prior to this dukedom there had existed an Earldom of Orkney that was surrendered in 1470 by William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney.

Mary wrote a will at Sheffield in 1577 ineffectually declaring his title to Orkney null and void, after Robert was imprisoned in 1575 for obtaining a letter from the King of Denmark declaring him sovereign of Orkney. His crimes included colluding with Shetland pirates. The Earl was imprisoned at Linlithgow Palace. He was released in 1579. He built the Palace of Birsay on Orkney. On his death in 1593 the earldom passed to his son Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney.

    From the Scots Peerage:

Robert Stewart of Strathdown was a half-brother of Queen Mary, being a natural son of King James V. by Euphame, daughter of Alexander, first Lord Elphinstone; she married, in 1540, John Bruce of Cultmalundie. Robert was born 1533, and was mentioned in the remainder of the castle and lands of Tantallon, granted to his half-brother James Stewart 31 August 1536, as son of the King by this lady nominatim. He obtained a grant of the Abbey of Holyroodhouse in commendam in 1539. In 1553 he went abroad, and was absent from Scotland for some years. After his return he early joined the Lords of the Congregation against the Queen-mother, and declared himself, according to Knox, to be on the Protestant side. On the return of Queen Mary he was constantly at Court, and had some knowledge of the plot for Darnley's murder. His elder children, legitimate and natural, were provided for out of the temporalities of Holyroodhouse. On 19 December 1564 he obtained a lease of the Crown lands of Orkney and Zetland, but this was revoked when the Queen married Bothwell and created him Duke of Orkney. In 1569, Lord Robert, however, exchanged the temporalities of Holyroodhouse for those of the See of Orkney with Adam Bothwell, Bishop of that Diocese, and in spite of the latter's protest that the proceedings were done by constraint, and also of various revocations and regrants, kept a hold on the earldom and bishopric of Orkney till his death. He was accused in 1571 of treason, having had intrigues with the King of Denmark relative to his islands, was imprisoned by the Regent Morton, and remained in ward until the latter's resignation. In September 1572 he received from Bishop Bothwell three charters of the lands of the bishopric to himself and his wife Jean Kennedy in liferent, and to Henry, their eldest lawful son, whom failing, to Patrick Stewart, his brothergerman, whom failing, to Lord Robert himself, whom failing, to Robert, his natural son, whom failing, to James Stewart, also a natural son, with a remainder to other persons named. He had the satisfaction of assisting at Morton's fall, conveying him to prison. By his nephew King James VI. he was, on 28 October 1581 created Earl of Orkney and Lord of Zetland, with remainder to the heirs of his body, legitimately born, whom failing, to the King. He obtained another entail of the earldom of Orkney, 9 June 1585, and died 4 February 1592-93. He married in 1561 Jean Kennedy, eldest daughter of Gilbert, third Earl of Oassillis, and had issue: 1. Henry, Master of Orkney, mentioned in the entail of the earldom 9 June 1585. He predeceased his father before 1590, when his brother Patrick is styled Master of Orkney. 2. Patrick, his successor. 3. John, created Lord Kinclaven and Earl of Carrick. (See the latter title.) 4. Sir James Stewart of Eday and Tullos, Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King James vi. In spite of the misleading footnote in Wood's Douglas, he was a legitimate son, and is, 1584, described as brother-german of Henry and Patrick, third born. His brother's downfall involved him in difficulties, and he and his eldest son had a protection from their creditors in 1635. He and his wife Margaret Lyon, in 1625, obtained a grant of £900 Scots 'in commiseration of their poore and indigent estate. They had issue:—(1) Colonel Robert Stewart of Eday, ancestor of that family in Orkney. Heirs to the earldom except for the attainder. (2) Colonel John Stewart of Newark, who left issue. (3) Mary, married (contract 1639) to Alexander Bothwell of Glencorse. (4) Margaret. (5) Jean, married, first, to Major George Crichton of Abekie; secondly, to Frederick Lyon of Brigtoun. 5. Sir Robert Stewart of Middleton, described in 1584 as brother-german of Henry, Patrick, and James, and fourth born. He was at one time abroad, and secretary to the Vice-Chancellor of Poland, and then in Ireland. King James VI. wrote to one Stallenge to commend his suit for Elizabeth, daughter of Christopher Kenne, his ward, 14 April 1604. 6. Marie, married (contract 25 November 1585) to Patrick, sixth Lord Gray, as his second wife. 7. Jean, married, first, to Patrick, first Lord Lindores; and secondly, as third wife, to Robert, first Lord Melville of Raith. She survived him, and was alive in 1642. 8. Elizabeth, married to James Sinclair of Murkle, second son of John, Master of Caithness. 9. Barbara, stated to have been married to Hugh or Harry Halcro of Halcro in Orkney.

Earl Robert had a large number of illegitimate children. 1. Robert Stewart, who was legitimated. He is usually named before his brother James, and they are first named in 1566 in a grant to their brother Henry and two sisters, being carefully distinguished as natural sons. 2. James Stewart, who was also legitimated. He received with his brother Robert in 1574 provision out of the teinds of Holyroodhouse. It is exceedingly difficult to disentangle the history of these legitimated sons from those of their lawful brothers of the same name. 3. James Stewart of Graemsay in Orkney (his mother said to be Janet Robertson of Strowan), who was implicated in his father's treasonable intrigues with Denmark. 4. William Stewart of Egilshay, summoned 1600 to find caution for appearance at trial 'for the schamefull and cruell murther of Bellenden, his first spouse.' He was later a colonel in the Swedish service in 1609. 5. George Stewart of Eynhallow, legitimated 29 November 1586. His mother, and the mother of Edward and David was Marjorie Sandilands, wife of Adam Gordon, brother of John Gordon of Avachie. He had in 1584 been included in the provision out of the teinds of Holyroodhouse, and in 1585 was in the entail of the earldom of Orkney and lordship of Zetland. He had a number of lands, afterwards erected into the tenandry of Brugh, and was dead before 30 March 1616. 6. Edward Stewart of Brugh, ancestor of that family. He held the half of the lands of Brugh, and succeeded to his brother George before 30 March 1616. 7. David Stewart of How. 8. Christian married to John Mouat of Hougaland in Shetland, and, as his widow, was living, and in feud with her brother-in-law, in 1634. 9. Grizel, married before 27 December 1591 to Hugh Sinclair of Brugh in Shetland. 10. Mary, said to have been married to Lawrence Sinclair of Goat, in Shetland.

    Notes:

One of TWK's eleven "gateway ancestors", and LDN's sole one so far. He emigrated to New England in 1639, when he was an old man, with his wife and several other family members, including his son John and John's first wife whose name has been lost. The ship on which they travelled was probably the Jonathan.

Before emigrating he was an assessor for the parish of Kingston Seymour in Somerset, and (probably) a merchant in Bristol.

His descendants include the "Boston Brahmin" Lowell family, as in "the Lowells speak only to Cabots, and the Cabots speak only to God." Notable individuals descended from him include:

James Russell Lowell (1819-1891), poet, critic, editor, abolitionist, and diplomat

Charles Russell Lowell (1835-1864), Civil War general

Percival Lowell (1855-1916), astronomer, founder of Lowell Observatory in Arizona, brother of Abbott Lawrence Lowell and Amy Lowell

Abbott Lawrence Lowell (1856-1943), president of Harvard University, 1909-33, brother of Percival Lowell and Amy Lowell

    Other Events:

    • Baptised: 7 Jul 1603, Barkham, Berkshire, England

    Notes:

A probable "gateway ancestor" of TWK. The issue is whether the Elizabeth who married Augustine Clement was a sister of the immigrant Edward Bullock. Genealogist Leslie Mahler has been arguing the case for this in a variety of places, for instance noting on SGM that "There are a number of records connecting Augustine Clement & Edward Bullock to each other. They originated in neighboring parishes, one calls the other 'brother' etc."

Robert Charles Anderson's sketch of Edward Bullock in volume 1 of The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, p. 476, notes that the list of debts attached to the end of Edward Bullock's will mentions "brother Clemens," of which Anderson remarks, "probably referring to Augustine Clement as a brother in the church." To that, Mahler points out that Edward Bullock was not a member of the church. And in volume 2 of the same Great Migration series, in the sketch of Augustine Clement (p. 101), Anderson seems much closer to being convinced that Clement's wife Elizabeth was a sister of Edward Bullock:
On 26 July 1649, "Elisabeth Clements testified on oath that Edw[ard] Bullock of Dorchester is the son of Mr. W[illia]m Bullock late of Barkham in Berkeshirre" [Aspinwall 227]. In his will of 25 July 1649, "Edward Bullock of Dorchester" appointed Augustine Clement as one of his overseers, and among the debts owed by his estate was one to "brother Clements" [SPR 1:288-89; GM 2:1:476-77].

"Elisabeth Clements" of the 1649 deposition was almost certainly the wife of Augustine Clement. In the normal course of events, we might suggest that the reference to "brother Clements" indicated a church relationship, but we have no evidence that Bullock was a member of Dorchester church. Wokingham and Barkham are adjacent parishes in Berkshire. All of this suggests that Augustine Clement had married a sister of Edward Bullock.

The registers of Barkham, Berkshire, show that the two youngest children of William Bullock, gentleman, were Edward, baptized 6 August 1595, and Elizabeth, baptized 7 July 1603 [Leslie Mahler, private communication]. Although there is a discrepancy between this baptismal date and the age given in 1635 on embarkation by EDWARD BULLOCK {1635, Dorchester} [GM 2:1:476-77], this would appear to be the immigrant, and the sister Elizabeth baptized in 1603 would be of an appropriate age for the wife of Augustine Clement.
Neither Edward Bullock nor the wife of Augustine Clement are included among the gateway ancestors in Richardson's 2013 Royal Ancestry, but a line from Edward I to Winston Churchill and to the Bush presidents, a line which presumes that the wife of Augustine Clement was a daughter of William Bullock, is included in Gary Boyd Roberts's 2018 The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants (citation details below). In the notes to the line, Roberts says that it was "brought to my attention by Leslie Mahler of San Jose, California, and the name of William Bullock's wife was added by Douglas Richardson of Salt Lake City. Clinching proof (or disproof) that Mrs. Elizabeth Clement(s) was a sister of Edward Bullock of Dorchester, Mass., would be welcome."

He was admitted a pensioner at Sidney College, Cambridge, 8 Jul 1612. He matriculated 1614, B.A., 1617-18. He was Rector of Thorpe by Wainfleete (Thorpe-in-the-Marsh) in 1630, a parish next to Wainfleet All Saints where his elder sister Mary had married the rector in 1622. He left Thorpe-in-the-Marsh sometime before Dec 1638, when John Watts is recorded as the vicar there, and is next seen in Boston, Lincolnshire, where he married his second wife Sarah Fisher. The exact date of his emigration to New England is unknown but it appears to have taken place in 1639. He did not subsequently live long there, but he is recorded there as having arranged for certain monies to be provided to his four older children.

    Notes:

One of TWK's eleven "gateway ancestors."

"Because in all probability no other seventeenth-century English emigrant to America had so many close kinsmen of high rank as Anne possessed, they are partially listed here, at the risk of repetition. Through her great-aunt Bridget Baynton, Anne was the second cousin of the Countess of Suffolk, the Countess of Lincoln and the Countess of Rutland, and the second cousin, once removed, of the Duchess of Buckingham. Through her great-grandfather Sir William Cavendish, she was a great-niece of the Earl of Devonshire, the Countess of Shrewsbury and the Countess of Lennox, and the first cousin, once removed, of Lady Arabella Stuart, the Duke of Newcastle and the Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull. This constitutes an outstanding example of the fluidity of English society, a fluidity which would have been almost impossible in the caste systems of the European continent." [Walter Goodwin Davis, citation details below.]

Davis is probably right that "no other seventeenth-century English emigrant to America had so many close kinsmen of high rank as Anne possessed", although Mary Launce (ancestor of AP) was probably competitive. Meanwhile, gateway ancestor Elizabeth St. John (ancestor of JTS) was probably the emigrant most closely related to contemporary English royalty, being a half fifth cousin once removed to Charles I. Anne Baynton was a sixth cousin once removed to that particular monarch, through common ancestors Richard Wydevill and Joan Bittlesgate.

"In 1664 [...] Anne, wrote Lord Clarendon in England requesting help restoring a wine license formerly granted to her father." [Royal Ancestry, citation details below]

Anne married Christopher Batt on 12 Oct 1629 in St. Edmund's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Christopher (son of Thomas Batt and Joane Byley) was born before 6 Jul 1601; died on 10 Aug 1661 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Selectman of Dover, New Hampshire, 1702.

Representative in the New Hampshire legislature, from Dover, 1711. "His descendants for six successive generations subsequent to himself have been in the New Hampshire legislature. [...] He married, in 1676 or before, Elizabeth _____, by whom he had seven children: Thomas, John, Paul, Benjamin, Gershom, Tamsen and Elizabeth." [Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, citation details below.]

From The Wentworth Genealogy (citation details below):

"The time of his death can be arrived at only by reference to the Journal of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, in the office of the Secretary of the State, which contains nothing prior to 9 May 1711. He was present as Representative of Dover (his colleagues being Capt. Nathaniel Hill and Stephen Jones) at the sessions of June and July, September and October, 1711. The House adjourned 30 October 1711, to 15 November 1711. He was not present at that session, nor at the one commencing in February 1712. The Journal of the House, 6 May 1712, reads thus:

"'Upon the death of Mr. Ezekiel Wentworth, Capt. Timothy Gerrish was chosen Representative from the town of Dover, and this day appeared and was qualified.'

"The following is also from the records:

"'Memorandum. That Ezekiel Wentworth, Mr. Stephen Jones, and Capt. Nathaniel Hill had their debentures from October 23, 1710, to May 10, 1712. Capt. Hill, 73 days; Ezekiel Wentworth, 37 days; Mr. Jones, 25 days.'

"These '37 days' were doubtless all before 30 October 1711, and so it is impossible to tell how long after that day, or how long before 6 May 1712, Ezekiel died."

Ezekiel married Elizabeth about 1669 in Salmon Falls, Rollinsford, New Hampshire. Elizabeth was born about 1650; died before 9 Mar 1726. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

MP in the Long Parliament and Rump Parliament, Solicitor General, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Chief Justice of the King's Bench.

His relationship to the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War is extraordinarily complex and beyond the scope of this database.

He was probably born, like his sister Elizabeth, in Keysoe, Bedfordshire. Contrary to his Wikipedia article and his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was not a great-grandson of Oliver St. John, first Baron St. John of Bletso; they were instead first cousins twice removed, being both descended from John St. John (d. 1525) and his wife Sibyl ferch Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip.

Family/Spouse: Joanna Altham. Joanna died before 1638. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors." Sister to the Oliver St. John who was chief justice of England under Oliver Cromwell.

"She…was known for her beauty, dignity and commanding presence. For a woman of those days she had received a good education which made her the fit companion of the scholars and statesmen who were her relations. Even in her old age she did not lose her youthful fondness for the great poets of England, Chaucer, Spenser and Shakespeare, with whose works her husband's library at Lynn was stored. It is clear from the circles in which she moved that she was well informed about current affairs and the rights of government and royal prerogative." [John Roger Scott Whiting, citation details below]

She was a half first cousin 4 times removed to Henry VII, through descent from Henry VII's grandmother Margaret Beauchamp (d. 1482). By the same common ancestor, she was a half fifth cousin once removed to her contemporary Charles I, making her possibly the seventeenth-century emigrant to New England most closely related to a sitting English monarch.
