The ancestry shown here for Anthony Irby is sourced to "Among the Royal Servants: Welby, Browne, Quarles and Related Families" by David H. Kelley, Don C. Stone, and David C. Dearborn, in Foundations, journal of the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy, volume 3, number 4, July 2010. Kay Allen has opined (on SGM, 16 Feb 1999) that no primary evidence exists for this; that Anthony Irby was "a 'new man' of the Tudors, and as such, was given an 'old' pedigree by the heralds. It is very likely that he comes from a family of prosperous yeoman sheep farmers around Swineshead."

    M.P. for Stamford, 1545. M.P. for Boston, Mar 1553, Apr 1554, Nov 1554, 1555, 1558, 1559, 1563, and 1571.

"The major part of Irby's parliamentary career lies outside the Elizabethan period. He is not mentioned in the known surviving records of the House for 1559 or 1563, and in 1566 there is only a licence of absence 'for his affairs' granted on 17 Dec. In his last House of Commons he sat on the committee of the bill against tellers and receivers (23 Apr. and 26 May), and the navigation bill (8 May). On 19 Apr. 1571 Boston granted him £5 'in full payment and recompense of all his charges, fees and expenses' since 2 Apr., when the parliamentary session began. In religion he conformed to the changing patterns of his time, holding office under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. He voted against a government bill in 1555, and was described as 'indifferent' in his bishop's report to the Privy Council in 1564. Whatever his religious views were when he was returned to Parliament in 1571, he ought to have taken the oath of supremacy. He was alive in September that year but the will he had drawn up in 1562 was proved as Nov. 1571. It mentions land at Boston, Moulton and Swineshead, Lincolnshire. Irby was buried at Boston. His widow married as her third husband, Robert Carr of Sleaford, the supervisor of Irby's will, where he is described as a 'faithful friend': the two may have served together during the northern rebellion." Notes:

    From Jacobus, The Bulkeley Genealogy:

"Mr. Anthony Irby was first cousin of Olive Irby, the wife of Rev. Edward Bulkeley, and mother of Rev. Peter Bulkeley. Mr. Irby's wife, Alice Welby, was sister of Richard Welby who was married at Whaplode in 1595 to Frances Bulkeley, daughter of Edward and Olive and sister of Peter. Hence, Peter Bulkeley not only was cousin of the Irbys of Whaplode, but his brother—in-law (Richard Welby) was brother of Mrs. Anthony Irby, the wife of the head of that house.

"Mr. Irby studied law, was a member of Lincoln's Inn, and was admitted to the bar, 10 Feb. 1577/8. He represented Boston, co. Lincoln, in Parliament three times during Elizabeth's reign, and in 1603 (1 James I), and was one of the Masters in Chancery in the reign of King James I.

"It has been foolishly asserted in Thompson's History of Boston, in Collins' Peerage, and other works, that he purchased the manors of Moulton, Fitzwalter and Medietas Dominorum from Robert Radcliffe (Lord Fitzwalter and Earl of Sussex) on 13 Oct. 1538. This date was at least several years before he was born. The purchase could apply to his grandfather Anthony Irby (died 1552), but it seems quite evident that the Moulton lordship came by inheritance through the later Anthony's mother from the Serjeant family."

[Note that in fact Alice Welby was Richard Welby's half-sister, not sister, a fact unavailable to Jacobus when The Bulkeley Genealogy was written.]

Anthony married Alice Welby on 22 Dec 1575 in Whaplode, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England. Alice (daughter of Thomas Welby and (Unknown first wife of Thomas Welby)) died before 21 Apr 1602; was buried on 21 Apr 1602 in Whaplode, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

MP in the Long Parliament and Rump Parliament, Solicitor General, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Chief Justice of the King's Bench.

His relationship to the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War is extraordinarily complex and beyond the scope of this database.

He was probably born, like his sister Elizabeth, in Keysoe, Bedfordshire. Contrary to his Wikipedia article and his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was not a great-grandson of Oliver St. John, first Baron St. John of Bletso; they were instead first cousins twice removed, being both descended from John St. John (d. 1525) and his wife Sibyl ferch Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip.

    Notes:

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors." Sister to the Oliver St. John who was chief justice of England under Oliver Cromwell.

"She…was known for her beauty, dignity and commanding presence. For a woman of those days she had received a good education which made her the fit companion of the scholars and statesmen who were her relations. Even in her old age she did not lose her youthful fondness for the great poets of England, Chaucer, Spenser and Shakespeare, with whose works her husband's library at Lynn was stored. It is clear from the circles in which she moved that she was well informed about current affairs and the rights of government and royal prerogative." [John Roger Scott Whiting, citation details below]

She was a half first cousin 4 times removed to Henry VII, through descent from Henry VII's grandmother Margaret Beauchamp (d. 1482). By the same common ancestor, she was a half fifth cousin once removed to her contemporary Charles I, making her possibly the seventeenth-century emigrant to New England most closely related to a sitting English monarch.

Elizabeth married Rev. Samuel Whiting on 6 Aug 1629 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. Samuel (son of John Whiting, Mayor of Boston, Lincolnshire) was born on 20 Nov 1597 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England; died on 11 Dec 1679 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts; was buried in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts. Other Events:

    • Baptised: 12 Jun 1614, Odell, Bedfordshire, England

    Notes:

Arriving in 1634, he was the first of the extensive Bulkeley family to come to New England.

Matriculated pensioner from St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, Easter 1629, he studied with the Rev. Cotton in New England while boarding at his house. He was ordained in Marshfield in 1643. After fifteen years as the minister there, he was installed as his father's successor at Concord in 1659, and remained there for 53 years.

He is said to have been disabled in some manner ("lame and of a feeble constitution"). Of his preaching style, Grindall Reynolds had this to say in 1896:
One production of Mr. Bulkeley has escaped the tooth of time, -- his sermon delivered after the return of Captain Thomas Wheeler from Brookfield fight. It was a time to stir a man's soul. The whole Colony was convulsed. Every frontier settlement and every lonely farmhouse was in peril. Two of his parishioners had been slain. Two more came home so shattered that they lingered only a few months. The lot of these might any hour be the lot of his hearers. You read the sermon through from text to conclusion. There is not one throb of pathos in it. You cannot find an eloquent line, hardly an impressive sentence. It is a maze of Inquisitions and Instructions, of Applications and Uses, of Doctrines and Reasons, of Motives and Improvements, wherein the mind wanders and is lost. How could a tender human heart help breaking through the meshes of formality? And how was it possible for men, of rude speech possibly, but of strong and hot sympathies, to admire or approve such stiff and measured utterance?

With so little to guide it is not possible to speak confidently. Still this is certain. The younger Bulkeley has not left behind the impression of power which his father did. Apparently he had not his vigorous personality, his culture, or his great heart. Mather calls him "the worthy son" of a worthy sire. Clearly he was that. An honest, faithful, and devout man. But with all his real excellence one who did not rise much above mediocrity.

Gershom Bulkeley was an early graduate of Harvard University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1655 and possibly his master's degree in 1658. After receiving his master's degree he might have married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of then Harvard President, Charles Chauncy. In 1661 became the minister of the Congregational church in New London, CT, where he served for roughly 5 years. He then became minister of the Congregational church in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut where he served until 1677. He left the ministry and practiced as a physician in Glastonbury, CT.

When the Salem Witch Trials spread from Massachusetts to Connecticut in the autumn of 1692, he expressed considerable scepticism about the evidence, saying that he had heard nothing of any weight to convince him that anyone was guilty of witchcraft. In particular he argued that Marcy Disborough, one of the only two women accused in Connecticut who actually stood trial for witchcraft, was the victim of the malice of her neighbours. Mercy was founded guilty and sentenced to death, but received a reprieve. She was set free and died some time after 1709.

Gershom married Sarah Chauncy on 6 Oct 1659 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Sarah was born on 13 Jun 1631 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England; died on 3 Jun 1699 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
