Egregious Self-Promotion II
Posted by Jim Macdonald at 05:43 PM * 12 comments

Today’s mail included contributor copies of the February issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which has our short story “Philologos; or, A Murder in Bistrita,” a tale set in our Land of Mist and Snow universe.

Rush out to your news stand (O ye who do not yet subscribe) and buy a copy. Sure to be a collector’s item! (For certain values of “sure,” “collector,” and “item.”)

I will be looking for it since I especially enjoyed that book. Yaay.

(we've subscribed since, ummm, I think 1978, and have them ALL upstairs in the periodical library.)

Duly noted, Jim. Any other novel in the works that has that setting?

#3 ::: James D. Macdonald ::: (view all by) ::: December 14, 2007, 11:16 PM:

There's another novel in the works which is a fantastical alternate-historical American Civil War, but it is not a direct sequel (no repeated characters).

Thanks for this little self-pimpage.

I just came to the realization (after I called my sister and confirmed that I remembered the names of the authors) that you were 1/2 of the team that brought my family the Mageworld series of novels. These books made the rounds of all the readers in my family so many times that I think the covers fell off. They were the perfect "Junk Food" sci-fi and we loved them dearly. Thank you!

I suppose I'll have to pick up your latest magnum opus.

Cheers!

All I had to do was look up Bistrita to know this would be worth reading. I loved *Mist and Snow* and am looking for more of *Mageworlds*... thanks!

The subscribers, of course, should also buy copies at the newsstand, so they will have pristine issues to put on Ebay later on, when the world-wide shortage becomes evident. Looking forward to reading it, and the upcoming novel as well.

Jim @ 3... The novel is in the works, yes, but is there a tentative publication date?

My copy finally arrived, and got to the top of my stack. Excellent.
I did start wondering when the inzcver would show up around the third page, but when you set a story in Bistrita, that can't be unexpected.

Land of Mist and Snow is now on order, and should be here on Monday or Tuesday.

The inzcver doesn't show up until the sixth page, and then near the bottom.

Does it help to know that the working title for this was "Ubj Terra Jnf Zl Fgevtbv"?

@10 - arrrrgggg

Overall, though, I did find that it was "-- an amusing story, worth telling over brandy and cigars [...]."

“Philologos; or, A Murder in Bistrita,” having appeared in F&SF, and reprinted in Year's Best Fantasy 9, will make an appearance at Tor.com commencing Friday, the 4th of December, 2009.
