Apologies to anyone who tried to post a comment during the last couple of hours, and got an error message. That was a side effect of our failed attempt to convert the Nielsen Hayden weblogs to a MySQL backend, the better (that was the theory) to flexibly deal with comment spam. Anyway, Movable Type’s conversion script ran for over two hours and wound up mysteriously aborting when it was about 85% done. It’s 1 AM; I’m going to bed, and when I get up, I may well heave the entire computer and blog apparatus into the East River. I’ve had it. [01:46 AM]

As someone who has been up for a while (PST) fixing a datamart load from home before everybody hits their desks, you have my heartfelt sympathy.

Now, is it worth going back to bed? Probably . . .

Either you thoughtfully provided waterproofing and a long extension cord to your computer or you've decided there was no need for overkill, but either way, I sympathize with your tech frustrations and am glad to see the site's still up and at least briskly walking.

I feel your pain. This conversion process isn't pleasant. I started converting my Berkeley db to MySQL a little after midnight on Saturday, January 10, 2004. I finally finished at 4:45 am, after two stallouts and two datadumps. The most infuriating part was, that similar to yours, one of the stalls occured after completing 90% or so of the conversion. I could have cried.

At least when this medium Goes Bad your hands aren't stained black by mimeo ink...
