    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 12 Apr 1778, Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut

    Notes:

He was a deputy to the General Court of Connecticut from Middletown from 1738 to 1771. He was also magistrate of Middletown and judge of the County Court of Hartford county. A stern man, he was known to put considerable energy into enforcing the Sabbath. He was a slaveowner. Wetmore Memorial, noting a family tradition that he eventually emancipated his slaves, shows that this was untrue. Slavery was abolished in Connecticut in 1784, six years after Judge Wetmore's death.

His second and third wives were both named Hannah. Hannah Whitmore was a descended of Francis Whitmore, the immigrant to Cambridge whose family has been frequently confused with that of the Wetmores. His third wife, Hannah Edwards (d. 1744), was a daughter of JTS's ancestors the Rev. Timothy Edwards (1669-1758) and Esther Stoddard (1672-1770), thus a sister of JTS's 6X-great grandfather Jonathan "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" Edwards and a great-aunt to Jonathan's grandson Aaron Burr. Wetmore Memorial says that the young Aaron Burr studied law under Judge Wetmore.

Seth married Hannah Whitmore. Hannah (daughter of Joseph Whitmore and Mary Warner) was born on 11 Sep 1715; died on 1 May 1744; was buried in Washington Street Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
