Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Samuel DerrSamuel Derr was born on 12 Mar 1822 in Middletown Valley, Frederick, Maryland; was christened on 12 Apr 1822 (son of Jacob Derr and Margaret Long); died on 7 May 1896 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland; was buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown, Frederick, Maryland.

    Notes:

He was a slaveowner — the 1850 census shows that he owned at least one black male slave aged 20 years — and, interestingly, a Republican. In 1875 he was a delagate to the Republican county convention at Frederick on the 6th of October.

From 1876 until his death he was the superintendent of Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown. He and his wife are commemorated in a stained-glass window in that church. His headstone indicates that he "fell asleep" on 7 May 1896, which we always find alarming.

Samuel married Mary Magdalena Yaste on 5 Dec 1844 in Frederick County, Maryland. Mary (daughter of Samuel T. Yaste and Anna Mary "Polly" Youtsey) was born on 1 Nov 1824 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland; died on 4 Oct 1905 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland; was buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown, Frederick, Maryland. Other Events and Attributes:

    Notes:

    Or Darr.

Roy H. Wampler (citation details below) notes that according to family tradition, the Derrs lived in Pennsylvania before settling in Maryland, and says that there is "a considerable body of evidence indicating that the father of Philip Derr was very likely a John Derr who died in Washington County, Maryland in 1785." This John Derr purchased several lots in Sharpsburg, Washington County on 15 Mar 1779, and one of the associated deeds calls him "John Darr of Lancaster County in the State of Pennsylvania." Furthermore, among the six children mentioned in this John Derr's will is a son named Philip, who he appointed one of his executors.

    Children:
    1. 4. Philip Derr was born on 25 Feb 1750 in Frederick, Frederick, Maryland; died on 3 Feb 1821 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland; was buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown, Frederick, Maryland.

  2. 10.  (Unknown) Koogle

    Notes:

By family tradition the Koogles were of German descent. It is proven that Barbara and Christian Koogle were siblings.

    Children:
    1. Christian Koogle was born in Maryland; died between 27 Feb 1829 and 4 May 1829 in Frederick County, Maryland.
    2. 5. Barbara Koogle was born on 29 Aug 1755 in Frederick, Frederick, Maryland; died on 8 Oct 1815 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland; was buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown, Frederick, Maryland.

    Notes:

Also spelled Pflug, Fluck, Flucke, Fleck, Flooke, Flug, Fluke, Fluckin, Flukein.

He arrived in America no later than 1752, when a warrant for fifty acres was issued to Jacob Flook of Frederick County. He became a naturalized citizen in 1760. He may have been the Jacob Flug who arrived in Philadelphia on 13 Aug 1750 on the Edinburgh out of Rotterdam.

His origins and life are the subject of a large number of baseless claims online and elsewhere. His parents are said to have been Johannes Jacobus Flook (Pflug), b. 1673, and Anna Margaretha (Nickelin) Erkuche. He is said to have been born in Germany on 2 Mar 1698, or in Schafhausen, Baden-Württemberg on 5 Jul 1702. He is also said to have served in the French and Indian War in Capt. Peter Bainbridge's company, mustered at Frederick County, Maryland. To the best of our knowledge, none of these assertions have any merit whatsover.

Roy H. Wampler's roundup of what is actually known about Jacob Flook, in The Derr Family 1750-1986 (citation details below), chaper 32, seems to us pretty thorough. Not yet seen by us is what Wampler describes as a "comprehensive, well-documented" piece about Jacob Flook: Patricia Aberlard Anderson, "Jacob Fluck of Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, and His Flook and Fluke Descendants." National Genealogical Society Quarterly 72:163, Sep 1984.

Jacob married Barbara. Barbara died after 21 Jan 1797. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
