Many online sites show an ancestry for the 17th- and 18th-century line of New World Hintons -- the line that includes Veitchel Hinton and his grandson Vachel -- from Edward III. This line descends from Edward to John of Gaunt, then Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, then Beaufort's well-documented natural daughter Jane Beaufort, then several generations of Stradlings, then some Palmers, and then to three generations of Hintons -- Sir Thomas Hinton (1574-1635), his son Sir John Hinton M.D. (1603-1682), and Sir John's probable son Thomas Hinton (1632-1708) who possibly went to Virginia and was perhaps an ancestor of Veitchel.

Online genealogist Diana Gale Matthiesen provides considerable documentation showing the line from Ann Nancy Hinton (1810-1842, known from family sources to be 3Xgreat-grandmother to Patrick) to Thomas Hinton (b. 1693) who married Rachel Howard. Online genealogist Hal Bradley shows the line from Thomas Hinton b. 1693 back to Sir John Hinton M.D., with many footnotes, some of which are to well-presented but undersourced family-history volumes like A Carolina-Virginia Genealogy (ed. York Lowry Wilson; Aldershot: Gale & Polden, Ltd., 1962), and some of which are to appalling messes like Hinton and Related Family History by George Washington Hinton (self-published, 1971-1992).

In sum, evidence for the suggested connection between Sir John Hinton M.D. and the Hintons of early colonial Virginia remains murky; as Gary Boyd Roberts remarks in his 600 Immigrants etc. (pp. 171-172, where he shows Sir John M.D. to have had a son James whose son John married Mary Hardy of North Carolina), "a fully documented Hinton monograph would be welcome."
