    Notes:

Little is known of him. His father called himself "yeoman," but the baptisms of his children call him "Mr." and "gentleman."

  3. 6.  Richard Waterman was born about 1605; died on 26 Oct 1673 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.

    Notes:

He came to New England in 1629, in advance of the Winthrop Fleet, and was one of the founders of Salem, Massachusetts. After a few years, he became a follower of Roger Williams, and was in due course banished from the Bay Colony and removed to Rhode Island, where he was one of the founders of Providence. He spent the rest of his life there in a variety of public offices and roles.

Surviving records suggest that he was known as a skilled hunter in his native England, and that he continued to practice this in the New World, both in order to provide food and also to drive away wolves.

A monument to him was raised in Providence in 1840; it contains several errors of fact. He never bore the title Colonel; there is no evidence that he came from Bristol in England; and he did not arrive in 1631 on the Lion with Roger Williams.

Richard married Bethia before 1630. Bethia died on 3 Dec 1680 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From "The Fenner, Browne, and Tully Ancestry," citation details below:

He married first, about 1565, _____ _____. He married secondly, Elizabeth _____, who was buried 4 May 1614.

After his death, the widow had trouble with Mr. Fenner's children, making it doubtful if she was the mother of any of them.

Although evidently a member of the Fenner or Venner family of Horley, since his body was brought there to be buried, Thomas lived in Horne and was resident there at the time of his death.
