The 1900 census says both her parents were born in Connecticut. The 1910 census says her father was born in New York state. The 1930 census says both her parents were born in New York. The latter census also says "Attended school: No" and "Able to read and write: Yes."

We derive her middle name Marcella from the recorded presence of a "Charlotte Marcella Story" as a sponsor or witness at the 13 Jun 1879 adult baptism of her husband Arthur Nicholas Story at Christ Church, Hartford, Connecticut.

The 1860 state census of Connecticut lists a Marcella Caroll, age 3, born in Connecticut, living with presumed parents Thomas and Marcella Caroll, both age 34, both born in Ireland. They also have a son Thomas, age 13, born in Ireland.

Notably, if Hepsibah were this couple's daughter, she would be a great-great grandaughter of Nathaniel Phelps (1653-1719) and Grace Martin (1656-1727), making TD an eighth cousin once removed to TNH.
