Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Welthea Bradford was born on 15 Nov 1757 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts (daughter of Samuel Bradford and Grace Ring); died on 8 Jun 1846.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Mar 1841, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York

    Notes:

If she died in Poughkeepsie as asserted in the Stephen Hopkins Mayflower Families through Five Generations book (citation details below), she must have removed there very late in life, as the records of her pension application state that she personally appeared before the Plymouth probate judge, calling herself "a resident of Duxbury" (and "aged Eighty years") in Aug 1838.

A typewritten letter from one Winfield Scott, Commissioner of the "Rev. & 1812 Wars Section" of the Federal pension office, to Mary C. Fraprie of Beacon Street, Brookline, Massachusetts, dated 16 Oct 1928, narrates Isaac Drew's service in the Revolution in some detail, and ends with the note that Isaac Drew's wife Welthea Bradford — who, the letter notes, he married "October 1, 1781", agreeing with the other genealogical sources cited here — was "allowed pension on her application executed August 16, 1838, while a resident of Duxbury, Massachusetts, aged eighty years. She died June 8, 1846." Which is entirely different from the information given in the Hopkins Mayflower Families book.

The Mayflower Families books use the much-complained-about "giant block of citations" model, in which it can be very difficult to determine which cited source or authority attaches to which stated fact. Failing a specific reason to believe that Welthea Bradford died in Poughkeepsie — or in 1841, as asserted by Ruth Gardiner Hall (citation details below) — we're inclined to believe Commissioner Scott's report that she died 8 June 1846, even if he was writing over eighty years later. For the simple reason that pension offices are strongly motivated to accurately know when their beneficiaries have died and no longer require further applications of public funds.

Welthea married Isaac Drew on 1 Oct 1781 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Isaac (son of Samuel Drew and Faith Petersen) was born in Jun 1748 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts; died on 3 Nov 1835 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts; was buried in Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Notes:

    Governor of Plymouth Colony 1621-33, 1635, 1637, 1639-43, and 1645-56.

    From Wikipedia:

William Bradford was an English Separatist originally from the West Riding of Yorkshire. He moved to Leiden in Holland in order to escape persecution from King James I of England, and then emigrated to the Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower in 1620. He was a signatory to the Mayflower Compact and went on to serve as Governor of the Plymouth Colony intermittently for about 30 years between 1621 and 1657. His journal Of Plymouth Plantation covered the years from 1620 to 1657 in Plymouth. [...]

William Bradford's most well-known work by far is Of Plymouth Plantation. It is a detailed history in journal form about the founding of the Plymouth Colony and the lives of the colonists from 1621 to 1646. Bradford's journal is described as a retrospective account of his recollections and observations. The first work was written in 1630; the second was never finished, but "between 1646 and 1650, he brought the account of the colony's struggles and achievements through the year 1646." As Walter P. Wenska states, "Bradford writes most of his history out of his nostalgia, long after the decline of Pilgrim fervor and commitment had become apparent. Both the early annals which express his confidence in the Pilgrim mission and the later annals, some of which reveal his dismay and disappointment, were written at about the same time." In Of Plymouth Plantation, Bradford drew deep parallels between everyday life and the events of the Bible. As Philip Gould writes, "Bradford hoped to demonstrate the workings of divine providence for the edification of future generations."

In 1888, Charles F. Richardson referred to Bradford as a "forerunner of literature" and "a story-teller of considerable power." Moses Coit Tyler called him "the father of American history." Many American authors have cited his work in their writings; for example, Cotton Mather referred to it in Magnalia Christi Americana and Thomas Prince referred to it in A Chronological History of New-England in the Form of Annals. Even today it is considered a valuable piece of American literature, included in anthologies and studied in literature and history classes. It has been called an American classic and the pre-eminent work of art in seventeenth-century New England.

The Of Plymouth Plantation manuscript disappeared by 1780, "presumably stolen by a British soldier during the British occupation of Boston"; it reappeared in Fulham, London, England. Philip Gould states, "In 1855, scholars intrigued by references to Bradford in two books on the history of the Episcopal Church in America (both located in England) located the manuscript in the bishop of London's library at Lambeth Palace." A long debate ensued as to the rightful home for the manuscript. Multiple attempts by United States Senator George Frisbie Hoar and others to have it returned proved futile at first. According to Francis B. Dedmond, "after a stay of well over a century at Fulham and years of effort to [e]ffect its release, the manuscript was returned to Massachusetts" on May 26, 1897.

Emigrated 1620, on the Mayflower, with his second wife Elizabeth Fisher and his children Elizabeth, Constance, and Giles. He was a tanner, merchant, and tavern-keeper.

Notable as the only Mayflower passenger to have previously visited the New World, as it now appears that he was the same Stephen Hopkins that served as the minister's clerk on the 1609 voyage to Jamestown of the Sea Venture. This ship was caught in a storm and ran aground at Bermuda, marooning its passengers. Sir Thomas Gates, who had been travelling to Jamestown as its newly-appointed governor, organized the passengers to build new boats to complete the voyage. Hopkins vocally dissented against Gates's authority, and was charged with mutiny and sentenced to death, but ultimately pardoned after many other passengers pled for clemency toward him. The boat-building project was successful and the passengers of the Sea Venture ultimately made it to Jamestown, from whence Hopkins ultimately returned to England in 1614. A written narrative of the Sea Venture's story was in circulation in England by late 1610 and is known to have been read by Shakespeare, whose The Tempest, first performed in November 1611, concerns a group of passengers shipwrecked by a storm, and includes a comic-relief drunk named Stefano who attempts to take over as their leader.

    Notes:

From "Lydia Gaymer, the Wife of Humphrey Turner of Scituate" [citation details below]:

Lydia was an infant when her mother died. She was about eleven years old at the death of her father, who in his will gave her part of a tenement called the Angell (located in Ockendon Fee, one of the five manors of Terling).

Lydia Gaymer and Humphrey Turner were married in the parish of Sandon. No evidence has been found that they lived there, but a quote from The Essex Village Book [Chelmsford: Federation of Essex Women's Institutes, 1988, p. 139] may explain why they chose to be married in Sandon:
Runaway brides in the 17th century did not all have to dash to faraway Scotland in order to obtain a quick wedding as the rector of Sandon, the Reverend Gilbert Dillingham, was only too ready to oblige. As news of his willingness and cooperation spread through and beyond the county, weddings at Sandon, which had averaged four per year, increased enormously. Between 1615 and 1635 the Reverend Dillingham married no fewer than 511 couples, including a daughter of the rector of Chelmsford, using an assumed surname, as apparently did lots of others. The parson undoubtedly grew fat on the wedding fees.

  27. 62.  Jonathan Brewster was born on 12 Aug 1593 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England (son of William Brewster and Mary); died on 7 Aug 1659 in New London, New London, Connecticut; was buried in Preston, New London, Connecticut.

    Notes:

He moved with his family to Leiden, Holland in 1608, where he became a merchant and a ribbon maker. Unlike his brothers Love and Wrestling, he stayed behind when the Mayflower sailed; he arrived at Cape Cod on the Fortune in November 1621. In 1630 he and his family moved to Duxbury, where he became a trader, working the coast as far south as Virginia. In 1635-36 he was in Windsor, Connecticut. In 1649 he settled in the New London area, where he spent the rest of his life.

From Kristen Wands, at the Windsor Historical Society site:

During his time in Windsor, Brewster began corresponding with John Winthrop, Jr., with whom he shared an interest in alchemy. Brewster had an alchemical laboratory in his home at Brewster's Neck. In 1656, he believed he was close to discovering the universal cure, a common goal among alchemists. He shared the progress of his experiments with Winthrop, saying, "I ffeare I shall not live to see it finished, in regard partly of the Indianes, who I feare will raise warres; and also I have a conceite that God sees me not worthy of a blessing by reason of my manifold miscariadges." Brewster worried not only that his life might be in jeopardy, but also that some accident would upset his experiments, which needed to sit undisturbed for years at a time. Typically Puritan, he worried that he was not Christian enough to receive the divine alchemical secrets he sought. Writing that he trusted Winthrop with his research more than his own children, Brewster promised he would "shortly write all the whole worke in few words, plainly ... & sealle it vp in a littel box, & subscribe it to your selfe... that if it please God I should suddainly be taken away, you may call for it." Ultimately, it appears Brewster's experiments were unsuccessful. His letters to Winthrop, however, provide a fascinating window into the minds of our New England forefathers.

While Jonathan Brewster's encounters with Native Americans do not seem to have affected his alchemy, later events suggest he was right to be nervous about his family's safety. In early March of 1659, while Brewster was away in Hartford, "12 [Narragansett] Indians came suddainly out of the bushes" surrounding Brewster's farm, and ran toward Mrs. Brewster, who was working in a field with one Mohegan and two English servants. Seemingly to shield her from the attack, the Mohegan ran toward "Mrs. Brewster, and held fast about hir, the other Indians pulled him by force from hir and presently killed him and cutt of his hand and fledd away." Apparently, the Narragansetts were upset that Brewster had been supplying his Mohegan allies with firearms, and the attack, which resulted in the death of the Mohegan servant, was in retaliation. Though no member of Brewster's family was physically harmed, the incident was a tremendous fright to all of the English settlers in the region.

When Brewster's death came, it was the result of an illness rather than an act of violence. He passed away in August of 1659, at 66 years of age. He was buried in Brewster's Neck Cemetery, which is all that remains of the family's home and trading post there.
