    From Leo van de Pas:

As in Lippe, Bernhard founded in 'Livonia' (part of the today's Latvia and Estonia) castles and cities such as Fellin and Kokenhusen. In 1211 he became abbot of the abbey of Dünamünde near Riga. Between 1213 and 1217 Bernhard recruited in Westphalia and adjacent areas for a Crusade in the Baltic, and he returned there briefly in 1217. In 1218 in Schleswig he sought help from Valdemar II Sejr, king of Denmark, in opposing the heathen Estonians. From there Bernhard travelled to Rome to seek his appointment as bishop of Selonia (in today's Latvia).

Following a further short stay in Livonia in 1219, Bernhard returned to his Westphalian homeland, and there he was ordained by his son Otto, bishop of Utrecht, as bishop of Selonia. Bernhard himself consecrated the monastic church of Marienfeld and the Marienkirche in Lippstadt, and granted its citizens city rights. In the spring of 1223 Bernhard put down an insurgency in Livonia.

On 30 April 1224 Bernhard died in Meztone, Latvia, aged over 80, and was probably buried in the abbey of Dünamünde. The Cistercian monks in Marienfeld revered him. The 'lippiflorium' of Magister Justinus, a medieval praise poem, celebrates his life.
