    Notes:

From "People and Events of Yesteryear: Charles Albert Squier", citation details below:

Charles Squier began his career with the Battle Creek Machinery Co., predecessor of American-Marsh Pumps, Inc., learning the machinist trade. It was while with this firm that he recognized the need in industry and business of an extra heavy shipping tag.

Charles and his father went to work on this idea. After designing a tag they were still faced with the problem of production. The two men built one machine after another, each better than the one before and finally evolved an automatic machine that would print, trim, reinforce and string a wire in the punched hole of the tag, all in one continuous operation. This machine was in operation by their American Mfg. Co. as early as 1888 and with addedre finements was used until the business here was sold in 1945. Members of the firm in its early days were Daniel and Charles Squier and Mr. Bromberg. [...]

For many years the tag factory was operated at the rear of the Fremont street residence. Charles A. Squier, 73, died at his home on Nov. 26, 1934 and for the next 11 years the business was continued by his son, John B. Squier. It was then sold to a Chicago firm. The factory building is now used by Bernice Squier for her Twinzy Toy Co.

Charles married Julia Elizabeth Hickman on 24 Nov 1892 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. Julia (daughter of John Elisha Hickman and Magdalin Miller) was born on 12 Sep 1870 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan; died on 1 Oct 1958 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mr. Merrill, a skilled artisan, came to Battle Creek in 1850 and Mr. Squier followed him here in 1856." ["People and Events of Yesteryear: Charles Albert Squier", citation details below]

    Notes:

He is said in several sources, including "People and Events of Yesteryear: Charles Albert Squier" (citation details below), to have served in the War of 1812. ancestry.com contains an entry for a "Squire, Daniel" in its War of 1812 Pension Application Files Index 1812-1815, which states his service to have been "Capt. H. Pratt's Co. N.Y. Mil." Whether this is our Daniel Squire is not established, although the (well-documented) fact that our Daniel Squire's father fought in the Revolution does add credence to the idea.

"Daniel Squier Sr. [...] was also a skilled artisan and a manufacturer of wooden mouldboard plows, wagons and woolen and linen spinning wheels." ["People and Events of Yesteryear: Charles Albert Squier" (citation details below)]

"Daniel Squier who married Sarah Ann Lytle left Camden Valley [in Washington County, New York] for Riga, Monroe County, New York in 1827. In 1847 he moved to Kingston, Wisconsin." [Francis A. Baker, citation details below]

According to a statement provided by the Department of the Interior to a descendant on 2 Feb 1917, this Daniel Squier fought at the battle of Bunker Hill.

This statement also noted that this Daniel Squier, living in Salem, Washington, New York in 1822, was at that time in his 67th year and that his wife was the same age.

According to Francis A. Baker (citation details below), after Daniel Squier and Elizabeth Wood married, they first settled in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont, then in the winter of 1790-91 they moved in a sleigh across the Green Mountains to Camden Valley, Salem, Washington County, New York.

    Notes:

He is possibly a son of Joseph Swayze, almost certainly a grandson of Barnabas Swayze, and undoubtably a descendant of earlier generations of the Swayze/Swazey family, as clearly indicated by the fact that he's buried in the section of the Swayze cemetery reserved for descendants of Barnabas Swayze.

Christopher married Sarah Davis about 1786. Sarah (daughter of William Davis and Sallie White) was born on 11 Apr 1768 in New Jersey; died on 1 Oct 1858 in Oakland County, Michigan; was buried in Baldwin (Paint Creek) Cemetery, Lake Orion, Oakland, Michigan. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 5

  1. 16.  Daniel Squier was born in Jan 1731 in Durham, Middlesex, Connecticut (son of Daniel Squier and Patience Barnes).

Daniel married Ellis Scott on 13 Nov 1754 in Ashford, Windham, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 8. Daniel Squier was born in 1756 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut; died on 25 Jan 1828 in Salem, Washington, New York.

  3. 18.  Nehemiah Wood was born on 16 Jan 1727 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut (son of Thomas Wood and Abigail Hartshorn).

    Notes:

Said to have died in 1796 in Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia. We've failed to find a source that confirms this, but we regard it as plausible for several reasons:

Nova Scotia Immigrants to 1867, Volume 1, by Leonard H. Smith (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1992) records the emigration to Falmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1760, of two brothers of Nehemiah Wood's wife Elizabeth Hovey: Daniel Hovey (b. Mansfield, 1736) and Enoch Hovey (b. Mansfield, 1738), both shown as sons of "Daniel/Elizabeth (Slap)", who were indeed the parents of Nehemiah Wood's wife.

The History of Kings County, Nova Scotia by Arthur Wentworth Hamilton Eaton (Salem: The Salem Press Company, 1910), page 441, gives an account of "one Daniel Hovey in King's County" who, in 1761, was jailed "for uttering certain expressions of a dangerous tendency" and subsequently released on order of the Nova Scotia Council at Halifax.

The genealogical section of the Life of George Dewey, Rear Admiral by Adelbert M. Dewey and Louis Marinus Dewey (Westfield, Massachusetts: Dewey Publishing Company, 1898) shows Moses Dewey, son of John, b. 10 Nov 1718 at Lebanon, Connecticut, who moved with his wife Mary English to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia about 1760, and whose daughter Mary, born 2 Aug 1765 at Corwallis, married, 22 Feb 1792, Jonathan Wood, son of Nehemiah and Elizabeth Wood.

Finally, an article by Mirth Hall, "Canadian Notes and Records," in the Dec 1972 issue of the Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Society (22:70), contains a list of "persons to whom town lots were assigned at Falmouth [Nova Scotia], November 15, 1760, taken from the Proprietor's Records." The 8th name on the list is Nehemiah Wood. By itself this proves little, since surely there were several Nehemiah Woods in New England and the Canadian Maritimes in 1760. But with all the other circumstantial evidence, it seems likely that this is our man.

Nehemiah married Elizabeth Hovey on 5 Mar 1752 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut. Elizabeth (daughter of Daniel Hovey and Elizabeth Slapp) was born on 1 Nov 1734 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 19.  Elizabeth Hovey was born on 1 Nov 1734 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut (daughter of Daniel Hovey and Elizabeth Slapp).

    Notes:

We have no death date for her, but if she lived past 1760, our guess is that she died in Nova Scotia. See the entry for her husband.

    1. 9. Elizabeth Wood was born on 19 Feb 1756 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut.

  5. 28.  Joseph Swayze was born in Hope, Warren, New Jersey (son of Barnabas Swayze).

  6. 30.  William Davis

    Notes:

Said to have come from Wales to New Jersey, where he and his brother David Davis bought a large tract of land on which the city of Newark was built. Later at Milford, New Jersey.

William married Sallie White. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 31.  Sallie White
