Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Alden Sears was born on 24 Feb 1739 in Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts; was christened on 1 Apr 1739 in Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts (son of Judah Sears and Mary Paddock); died on 25 Mar 1803 in Bristol, Ontario, New York.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 1738, Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts

    Notes:

Revolutionary War: Private in Capt. Elijah Walker's company, Col. John Hathaway's regiment which marched to the Tiverton Alarm in 1780.

From The Descendants of Richard Sares (Sears) (citation details below):

Alden Sears, " yeoman," of Rochester, resided for a time in Nova Scotia, and was one of the grantees of the town of Liverpool in 1761.

His wife dying, he returned to the States, living for a time in Pawtucket and Providence, engaged in boat-building and distilling.

He had been previously a seaman, and is said to have commanded a whaling vessel before he was of age.

Marrying again, he settled in Dighton, Mass., on the old Walker homestead, which, on the death of her father, fell to his wife. The old house is still standing, near 200 years old, and is a good specimen of early colonial times.

About the commencement of the Revolutionary War he resumed his voyages, and in returning from the West Indies with a cargo of molasses was captured by the British, lost his vessel and cargo, and was held prisoner several years.

An English officer, with whom he made friends, finally procured his release and supplied him with funds for his return. His wife is said to have had full faith during all the years of his absence that he would return, although others had given him up as dead.

According to the superstitions of the times, there were many signs convincing to her that he would return.

One evening in turning her tea-cup, the peculiar position of the leaves was proof that he was then on his way home.

She rose hastily, saying: "Alden will be home to-night, and I must put the house in order, and dress and go to meet him."

Upon opening the door, she really saw him in the distance approaching the house.

They removed to Bristol, N. Y., in 1792, with others from the vicinity of Dighton. For his land he paid six cents an acre.

He was in Capt. Elijah Walker's Co., in Col. John Hathaway's Regiment, and marched on "ye alarm of Aug. 2, 1780, to Tiverton, 18 miles' travel, 7 days' service, wages £1 8 0. Tiverton, 18 miles' travel, 7 days' service, wages £1 8 0."

    -----

Note on the above: Alden Sears married his second wife, Phebe Walker, the one in the anecdote above, in Dighton, Massachusetts, 29 December 1769. So his first wife, Hannah Bassett, who died in Nova Scotia on an unknown date, has to have died before then. Therefore what he returned to can't have been "the States" as claimed above. No entity called "the States", United States or otherwise, existed in eastern North America in or before 1769.

When Alden Sears went from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia and then back to Massachusetts, he no more thought of himself as visiting a foreign land than he would have thought that way of relocating to Connecticut. He probably would have considered Quebec a foreign place, because although it was by then ruled from London it was dominated by French speakers. But Nova Scotia was just another English colony in which most of the inhabitants spoke English.

Alden married Phoebe Walker on 29 Dec 1769 in Dighton, Bristol, Massachusetts. Phoebe (daughter of Elnathan Walker and Bethiah Tisdale) was born in 1748 in Dighton, Bristol, Massachusetts; died on 23 Oct 1830 in Bristol, Ontario, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

[Perhaps] [s]ister of Henry Dunster, first president of Harvard College. [Bassett-Preston Ancestors, citation details below.] Elizabeth Dunster, who was definitely a sister of the Harvard president, married his brother Simon Willard. The problem is that no records of Henry's family mention a sister named Dorothy.

  5. 20.  Rev. John Mayo was born about 1598 in Northamptonshire, England; died in May 1676 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

"John Mayo of Northamptonshire, who matriculated in the University of Oxford as a commoner's son from Magdalen Hall 28 April 1615, aged 17, but took no degree, was probably identical with the emigrant of that name who became colleague minister to John Lothrop at Barnstable in 1640, first pastor of Eastham in 1646, and first minister of the Second (North) Church in Boston 9 November 1655. Increase Mather was his colleague. Overseer of Harvard College. Dismissed in 1673 on account of age; died at Yarmouth in May 1676." [Samuel Eliot Morrison, The Founding of Harvard College, citation details below.]

Emigrated to New England with his wife and children sometime between 1638 and 1640 (sources differ). His duties as an overseer of Harvard College were by virtue of his role at the Second Church.

The Second Church at which Mayo was first minister was also known as the "Old North Church" -- but it isn't the church, or the congregation, called the "Old North Church" today. Mayo's church was on North Square, across the street from what is now called "Paul Revere's house." The church building in which Mayo preached was demolished and rebuilt on site in 1677, and this second building was dismantled for firewood by the British during their occupation of Boston during the Revolutionary War. The building now widely called "Old North Church", officially Christ Church in the City of Boston, is a separate congregation; it was built in 1723.

His successors as minister at the Second Church were Increase Mather and Cotton Mather.

He was hired at the port of Southampton, but despite the strenuous efforts of many researchers over many years, absolutely nothing has been proved about his English origins.

Deputy Governor of Plymouth, 7 Mar 1665 and 30 Oct 1667. Treasurer 3 Jun 1656, 3 Jun 1657, 1 Jun 1658. "Although there is no direct evidence for his literary and educational attainments, his extensive public service, including especially his appointments as colony treasurer and to committees on revising the laws, certainly indicates that he must have been well-educated." From "The Probable English Origin of Mayflower passenger Peter Browne, and His Association with Mayflower Passenger William Mullins," by Caleb Johnson, The American Genealogist 79:3, July 2004:

"The parentage and ancestry of William Mullins have not been conclusively proven. The Mullins family may have been living in Dorking for a considerable period of time prior to William Mullins himself, as the Dorking manor court rolls between 1454 and 1458 mention a Peter and Isabel Moleyn on several occasions. The Dorking parish registers are unfortunately defective for the years 1572 through 1578 -- the time period in which we would expect William to have been baptized. However, there was only one Mullins family in Dorking that was having children during this time period: the John Mullins who married Joan Bridger there on 8 July 1571. Most of their children would have fallen into the 'black hole' in the registers. On 23 September 1582, we see the baptism of their last child, Edward Mullins. On 4 February 1583/4, a Mullins (no Christian name given) was buried. Wc can reasonably assume this burial record was for John Mullins the father, because the next Mullins burial record in the registers, on 8 July 1584, was recorded as the 'son of widow Mullins.' And since son Edward Mullins appears in no subsequent Dorking records, we can speculate that this was the unnamed son who was buried. The following year, on 1 November 1585, the widow Joane Mullins was remarried to Vyncent Benham.
"Two Mullinses appear in later Dorking records; they are assumed to be unrecorded children of John and Joan (Bridger) Mullins. They are the Mayflower passenger, William Mullins, and John Mullins."
