From Wikipedia (accessed 19 Sep 2020):

Rev. John Maverick (1578-1636) was the first minister of the First Parish Church of Dorchester in early colonial Dorchester, Massachusetts.

John Maverick was born to Rev. Peter Maverick, a vicar in Awliscombe, Devon in 1578. In 1595, Maverick enrolled in University of Oxford. Five years later, in 1600, he married Mary Gye. Two of their sons, Samuel and Moses, are notable people in early Massachusetts history. In 1603, Maverick received his MA from Oxford. He was the curate for his uncle, Rev. Radford Maverick, from 1606 to 1614. Afterwards, he was rector of a church in Beaworthy, Devon until 1629.

Maverick became a Puritan before migrating to the Massachusetts Bay Colony at Dorchester, Massachusetts on 30 May 1630, where he served as the first minister of the First Parish Church of Dorchester with Rev. John Warham. He became a freeman in 1631 and helped establish the government in Dorchester. He died February 3, 1636. His eulogy was by John Cotton and Governor John Winthrop.

John married Mary Gye on 28 Oct 1600 in Ilsington, Devon, England. Mary (daughter of Robert Gye and Grace Dowrish) was born about 1580; died after 9 Oct 1666. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1586

    Notes:

Arrived in 1620 on the Mayflower with his wife Mary and three children, plus a servant who was called Jan Houck in Leiden and John Hooke in Plymouth. Prior to sailing, Isaac Allerton had been one of the members of the Leiden congregation most involved in preparations for the voyage. He was a merchant, and literate. He signed the Mayflower Compact. When William Bradford became governor in 1621, Allerton was chosen to be an assistant to him. He was in Marblehead in 1635, New Amsterdam in 1646, and also New Haven in 1646.

Robert Charles Anderson, in The Mayflower Migration (citation details below):

Isaac Allerton was one of the busiest and most complicated men in early New England, and no attempt is made here to cover his career comprehensively. A full-scale biography would be needed for that…Records for Allerton may be found in virtually every colony on the Atlantic seaboard and in the Caribbean, including Newfoundland, New Netherland, New Sweden, Virginia, Barbados, and Curaçao.

In noting his various residences above, we do not estimate years of removal, as he seems to have maintained residences simultaneously at more than one location. Also, the attempt made above to describe the estate of Allerton does not come close to showing the magnitude and intricacy of his business activities. No one has yet tried to survey comprehensively this, the major part of Allerton's life.

Isaac married Mary Norris on 4 Nov 1611 in Leiden, Netherlands. Mary was born in of Newbury, Berkshire, England; died on 25 Feb 1621 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Mary Norris was born in of Newbury, Berkshire, England; died on 25 Feb 1621 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Mayflower passenger, with her husband and three children. Her marriage record in Leiden describes her as "single woman from Newbury in England"; from that she is presumed to have come from the market town in Berkshire of that name, rather than the hamlet in Kent, but nothing is actually known of her origins beyond these six words.

    Children:
    1. 3. Remember Allerton was born about 1615 in Leiden, Netherlands; died between 12 Sep 1652 and 22 Oct 1656.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Peter Mavericke was born about 1550 (son of Robert Mavericke); died before 3 Feb 1617.

    Notes:

Clerk and vicar of Awliscombe, Devon. 3 Feb 1617, here given as the date prior to which he died, is the date on which the vicarage went to John Hassard. The record indicates that by then it had been vacant for some period of time, and (according to Elizabeth French, citation details below), the choice of Latin terminology employed hints that Peter Mavericke met a violent end. "In the parish register of Awliscombe the burial of Peter Mavericke is not recorded, nor is there any allusion in the registers to the time, place, or manner of his death."
