H., and trustee of Dartmouth College, from which institution he received the degree of D.D., in 1800." [History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family, citation details below.]

From John P. Peters's "Preface" to Diary of David McClure, citation details below:

Dr. McClure's grandfather, Samuel, and his brother David, with others, came from the neighborhood of Londonderry to Boston about 1728, and established a Presbyterian church in that city, later known as the Federal Street Church. Samuel McClure was the first Deacon of this church, and was succeeded in that office by his son John and his grandson Thomas. The latter resigned his office and left the church when it turned Unitarian under Dr. Channing.

David, the writer of this diary, was the son of John, the son of Samuel McClure, and of Rachel, daughter of William McClintock, one of the original immigrants. He was born in Newport, R. I., Nov. 18, 1748, but most of his early life was spent in Boston, where his father kept a retail grocery. His early training was obtained in Lovell's Latin School. At the age of fifteen, after a brief experience in a shop, he was sent to Dr. Wheelock's school at Lebanon, Conn., to prepare to become a missionary to the Indians. In 1765 he entered Yale College, and graduated in 1769, in the same class with the elder President Dwight. The late Rev. E. H. Gillett, D.D., in an article in Hours at Home, Feb., 1870, entitled "Yale College One Hundred Years Ago," gives a few extracts from letters of McClure and his schoolmate, David Avery. The former, under date of Oct. 30, 1765, writes to Dr. Wheelock of the dreadful way in which Freshmen are handled by the upper-class men. "Freshmen," says he, "have attained almost the happiness of slaves." Oct. 30, 1767, he writes "Jonne [John Wheelock, later President of Dartmouth College, then a Freshman at Yale] has been ordered up once or twice into the long garret with the rest of his class, and I think twice alone. It gives me great grief to see such practices held up in this seat of learning, and so little religious manners prevalent." In another letter, written after his experience among the Oneida Indians, he says "Mr. Johnson and I rarely converse in any other language [than Indian]. I hope not to lose what little I have already attained." As his diary also shows, his intention to be a missionary to the Indians was always before his mind. Later in his college course he writes about Dr. Daggett as follows "The Rev. President and tutors are universally loved in College, and have a tender concern for our future as well as present welfare and happiness."

After graduation, McClure took charge of Moor's Charity School at Lebanon, Conn. In 1770 he moved with the school to Hanover, N. H., where he was head of the school and tutor in Dartmouth College. In May, 1772, he and Frisbie were ordained to go as missionaries to the Delaware Indians on the Muskingum River, in Ohio, the expenses of the mission being supplied by asociety in Scotland. Owing to the unsettled conditions in that region preceding the outbreak of the Revolution, the mission proved a failure, and in 1773 McClure returned to New Hampshire, where he was installed pastor of the church at North Hampton in 1776. Dec. 10, 1780, he married Hannah Pomeroy, daughter of Rev. Dr. Benjamin Pomeroy, of Hebron, Conn., and niece of President Wheelock. She died in 1814, and in 1816 he married Mrs. Betsy Martin, of Providence, R. I., who survived him. In 1786 he was installed as pastor at East Windsor, Conn., where he also established a school. In 1798 his voice failed. After this he preached only occasionally, and finally, in 1807, resigned his salary, and in 1809 his pastorate, but continued to teach school almost if not quite to the time of his death. He was always deeply interested in Dartmouth College, and personally in its first President, his old teacher, Rev. Eleazer Wheelock, D. D. In 1777 he became a trustee of the college, and in 1800 it conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In 1795 he published a volume of Sermons on the Decalogue (Beach & Jones, Hartford). In 1811, in conjunction with Dr. Parish, he wrote Memoirs of Rev. Eleazer Wheelock. In 1818 appeared a second volume of his sermons, entitled Sermons on the Moral Law (printed and published by Wm. S. Marsh, Hartford). He also wrote a History of East Windsor.

In Sprague's Annals of the American Pulpit, Dr. McClure is described as a small man, well formed, and with very attractive manners, a man of culture and scholarship. He was a good preacher, and his sermons, contrary to the tendencies of his day, were moral and practical, not theological.

David married Hannah Pomeroy on 10 Dec 1780 in Hebron, Tolland, Connecticut. Hannah (daughter of Rev. Benjamin Pomeroy and Abigail Wheelock) was born on 8 Dec 1751 in Hebron, Tolland, Connecticut; died on 9 Apr 1814 in South Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From The History of the Descendants of John Dwight (citation details below):

He was a farmer and town surveyor and “a man of means,” residing at Belchertown, and of a decidedly religious turn of mind, and much given to theological speculation. He left behind him many essays on religious subjects. […]

Capt. Justus Dwight was a tory of the negative sort. Although thinking that the hour for colonial revolution and independence must and should one day come, he did not feel that it had arrived when those around him shouted and thundered that it had. Although remaining at home, he hired another to represent him on the battle-fields of strife.

Justus married Sarah Lamb on 19 Jan 1763. Sarah (daughter of Daniel Lamb and Martha Ashley) was born on 4 Sep 1736 in Wilbraham, Hampden, Massachusetts; died on 15 Feb 1832 in Belchertown, Hamsphire, Massachusetts; was buried in Dwight Cemetery, Belchertown, Hamsphire, Massachusetts. Governor of Connecticut from 1751 to 1754.

    From Wikipedia:

His formal education was severely limited by the nature of the frontier village, so at age twelve he was apprenticed to a weaver, and at the age of twenty-one entered that business on his own. He married Sarah Drake on December 3, 1702, and they had fifteen children before her death in 1748. Their son Oliver Wolcott Sr. signed the Declaration of Independence and went on to become governor of Connecticut.

In May 1709, Wolcott was admitted to the bar and began to practice law. In 1711, during Queen Anne's War, He accompanied militia forces on an expedition to Quebec as a commissary. On his return he served as Clerk of the House, 1710-1711 and was elected Deputy to the colony's Lower House in 1709-1714, 1718, 1719, serving as Speaker in October, 1719. In 1714 he was elected to the Upper House (also called the Council) and served as Assistant, 1714-1718, 1720-1741, 1754-1760. He was Commissioner of Connecticut for the Adjustment of Colonial boundaries, 1717, 1718, 1723-1726, 1728, 1730, 1737, 1740, 1742, 1750. Captain of the Trainband of Windsor, 1722. Captain of Troops raised for active service, 1724. He was made judge of the Hartford County court in 1723, serving through 1732, and of the colony's Superior Court in 1732, serving through 1741. Wolcott was made Colonel of the 1st regiment, 1739.

In 1741 Wolcott was elected Deputy Governor of the colony. As deputy governors traditionally served as the Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Connecticut, he also assumed that position, which he held until 1750.

In 1745 Wolcott was again active in the militia, this time as a Major General. In King George's War, Massachusetts governor William Shirley issued a general call to the New England colonies for an expedition against the French in Île-Royale (present-day Cape Breton Island). Wolcott served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in the Expedition to Cape Breton. General Wolcott headed the Connecticut troops in Sir William Pepperrell's expedition that captured Fortress Louisbourg.

With the death of Governor Jonathan Law in 1750, Wolcott succeeded to the position of governor. He was re-elected annually to that position through 1753. Shortly after he retired as governor, his son, Roger Wolcott, Sr., attended negotiations with six other British colonies and around 200 members of various Indian nations at the Albany Congress in June and July 1754. During his administration, a disabled Spanish ship, the St. Joseph and St. Helena, with a cargo valued at 400,000 Spanish dollars, ran aground near New London.

Wolcott ordered the ship seized and the cargo impounded in order to allow time to resolve conflicting claims between the vessel's captain and the salvage crew. While in the colony's custody, a large portion of the ship's cargo mysteriously disappeared. Tainted with the scandal surrounding the Spanish Ship case, he was defeated for re-election in 1754. All previous governors had died in office. Following his defeat, Wolcott generally withdrew from public life to study and follow literary pursuits. In 1759, Wolcott authored a short history of the Connecticut colony entitled Roger Wolcott's Memoir Relating to the History of Connecticut.
