"According to [Mormon Pioneer Genealogy Library] projections, the largest family in America today is the posterity of Robert White (b. ca. 1560) & Bridget Allgar, with a Mormon posterity of 430,000 and an American posterity of 29 million. The next five families are Edward Griswold and Margaret, Joseph Loomis and Mary White (daughter of Robert and Bridget above), Gerard Spencer and Alice Whitbread, Thomas Ford and Elizabeth Charde, and Thomas Bliss and Margaret Hulins, each with a Mormon posterity of 270,000 and an American posterity of 18 million."

"The English origin of John Leonard has not been ascertained, and if related to James Leonard of Taunton, Mass., nothing has been found to indicate it." [Hale, House and Related Families]

"He was an early settler of the town of Springfield, MA [...] He was chosen surveyor, 26 March 1640, to see that the highways were cleared and kept in repair. He was one of the town appraisers in 1645 [...]

"He was killed by Indians in Springfield 21 February 1675/766 during King Philip's War. 'He was killed by an Indian arrow while crossing the Agawam River to go to the assistance of relatives.'

"He was living in Springfield in 1636. He is not mentioned in The Great Migration Begins. He had 15 children. He is the progenitor of the Springfield Leonard line. No relationship is known to the James Leonard line, although they apparently communicated and knew each other. The Springfield Leonard line is followed in the Giles Memorial Genealogical Memoirs by John Adams Vinton (Boston: Dutton, 1864), pp. 280-316. "[Sarah Heald's] origin is likewise unknown, and since no Heald family was early settled at Springfield, she may have been brought there as a relative or as an indentured servant. It should be noted that in the next generation Gershom Hale or Heald, son of John Heald of Concord, settled in Springfield, and Sarah may have been Gershom's aunt and sister of John." Robert Charles Anderson (citation details below) considers it "highly probable" that this Edward Stebbing was the Edward Stebbing baptized at Black Notley, son of William Stebbing. He was certainly a brother of Editha Stebbing. John Insley Coddington ("The Stebbing Family," citation details below) appears to have had the same view, i.e., that Edward was probably a son of William, and that Edward and Edith/Editha were definitely siblings.

Emigrated 1633, first at Cambridge, where he lived at the southwest corner of Water (later Dunster) Street and Braintree or Harvard Street (later Massachusetts Avenue); "that is, he lived on what is now Harvard Square, opposite the Yard" [Coddington, citation details below]. He was a deputy from Cambridge to the Massachusetts general court in 1635.

In 1636 he migrated to Hartford with the Rev. Hooker's party. He served as deacon of the Hartford church from his arrival (or very shortly afterward) until his death. He was also a deputy to the Connecticut general court 21 times between 1639 and 1656. He was frequently appointed to take inventories of the recently deceased, and served in many other responsible positions. His name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford.

Edward married Frances Tough before 1629. Frances (daughter of Ralph Tough) was born between 1595 and 1597 in Burrow-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, England; died between 12 Nov 1673 and 23 Dec 1673 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
