Lanc. 1258-59, and Gov. of Lancaster Castle), suc. his grandfather about 1280, and 14 June (1294) 22 Edw. I, was summoned to attend the King in the French wars in Gascony, and was sum. to Parl. 23 June (1295) 23 Edw. I, 26 Aug. (1295) 24 Edw. I, and 6 Feb. (1298/9) 27 Edw. 1, by writs directed Willelmo le Butiller and Willelmo le Botiller de Werington, whereby he may be held to have become LORD LE BOTILLER. In (1305-06) 34 Edw. I he was in the expedition to Scotland. He d. about 1328. His widow Sibyl and his s. William were living in 1330. [The accounts of his issue are extremely contradictory, but none of his descendants (who were settled at Warrington, Bewsey, and elsewhere, co. Lancaster) appear to have been sum. to Parl.]" [Complete Peerage, citation details below]

Family/Spouse: Sibyl. Sibyl died after 1330. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Henry le Boteler was born about 1260 in of Warrington, Lancashire, England (son of William le Boteler and Dionysia de Lostok); died before 1280.

    Notes:

Annals of the Lords of Warrington (citation details below) says he was a knight of the shire for Lancashire in 1297 and died in the same year, but neither of these claims appear to be true. CP says that Henry died before his father, who died in 1280; this is why William's successor was William's grandson, Henry's son William (d. aft 1330).

Henry married Isabella le Boteler. Isabella (daughter of Richard le Boteler and Ellen de Haydock) was born in of Merton, Oxfordshire, England; died after 1328. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Also called William Fitz Henry Pincerna. Knighted 1256; sheriff of Lancaster 1258-59; governor of Lancaster castle 1260.

VCH Lancaster (Warrington) appears to conflate him with his son William. Annals of the Lords of Warrington has him dying in 1303, contrary to CP's death date of 1280, which may be the result of a similar confusion.

William married Dionysia de Lostok. Dionysia (daughter of Henry de Lostok and Joanna) died before 1303. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Richard married Ellen de Haydock. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Notes:

    Also called Richard le Boteler.

"The Boteler of Warrington's fee within the honour of Lancaster consisted of 8 knights' fees, of which two in Warrington and one in Layton in Amounderness lay within the county. This fee had passed to the Boteler family by the marriage of Beatrix, daughter and heir of Matthew de Vilers, to Richard le Boteler, who is believed to have been younger brother of Robert le Boteler of Engelby and Durandesthorpe, co. Derby, hereditary butler to the earls of Chester. Very full particulars of the infeudations made by the Vilers family are given in this inquest, most of them by Pain de Vilers, father of Matthew, who is described as the first to be enfeoffed of this fee." [Lancashire Inquests, Extents, and Feudal Aids A.D. 1205 - A.D. 1307 by William Farrer, citation details below.]

Some sources call him Richard fitz Robert Pincerna, which would indicate that he was Robert's son rather than his younger brother.
