Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Hollis was born in 1736 in England; died on 27 Aug 1832 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Said by some to have been born in or near London; said by his Wikitree entry, without obvious proof, to have been the John Hollis baptised 10 Jul 1737 in Risely, Bedfordshire, a son of John Hollis and Lydia Dickins. That he was born in England seems clear from his gravestone inscription.

He served several terms of enlistment in the North Carolina militia during the Revolution, under Gen. Griffith Rutherford and others. He is said to have on one occasion been captured and then escaped. After the war he was an early member of the Jersey Settlement Baptist Church in Rowan County, mentioned several times in their records as an elder. With his wife and their youngest son Micajah, he emigrated to Tennessee in 1808-09.

John married Mary about 1767. Mary died before 1820 in Rutherford County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mary died before 1820 in Rutherford County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

    Notes:

We know of no evidence that she was Mary Trantham or Mary Groom, as widely asserted online. A Mary Groom married a John Hollis in Baltimore in 1749, but our John Hollis would have been in his early teens at the time.

    Children:
    1. 1. David Hollis was born in 1769 in Rowan County, North Carolina; died on 16 Oct 1852 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.
