  1. 2.  Jacob Spaulding was born on 17 Dec 1732 (son of Isaac Spaulding and Elizabeth Haynes); died on 30 Apr 1814.

    Notes:

He is said on the Sons of the American Revolution application by his descendant Willis Spaulding to have served in the Revolution at the battle of Lexington, and to have been a private enlisted at Plainfield, Connecticut for eight days. We find this doubtful on chronological grounds. The Spaulding Heritage (citation details below) more plausibly asserts that he “served in the French War, and was present at the taking of Quebec by Gen. Wolfe.” The same source asserts that his sons Isaac and Daniel fought in the Revolution.

After Thomas Benedict died, his widow m. a Samuel Smith. Her children may have taken the name Smith which led to this error. Thomas Benedict was son of Samuel Benedict & Rebecca Andrews. • Alternate death: Jun 1685

    Notes:

The anonymous author of the web page Descendants of Thomas Smith points out that, contrary to many online sources, Hannah Smith Knapp didn't die in June 1685. She is mentioned in her father's will, drawn up 4 Jul 1687, but not in the will of her second husband, Thomas Lawrence, dated 26 Jul 1691 [Nicholas Knapp Genealogy], and therefore presumably died sometime between those dates.

    Children:
    1. Capt. John Knapp was born on 25 Jul 1664 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut; died on 5 Apr 1749 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.
    2. 12. Moses Knapp was born about 1666 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut; died before 16 Apr 1753 in Danbury, Fairfield, Connecticut.

    Notes:

According to Henry Marvin (citation details below), he was born sometime in the 1640s.

Samuel married Rebecca Andrews on 7 Jul 1678. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 29.  Rebecca Andrews (daughter of Francis Andrews and Anne).

    Notes:

The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America by Henry Marvin Benedict. (Albany, New York: Joel Munsell, 1870) identifies her as a daughter of Thomas Andrews, son of Robert and Elizabeth Andrews of Ipswich. But Robert Charles Anderson, in volume 1 of The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635, page 54, points out that this Thomas Andrews died unmarried on 10 Jul 1683. Both Savage and Jacobus (the latter in History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield identify this Rebecca as a daughter of Francis Andrews.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: of Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts

    Notes:

The idea that he was ever in Virginia has been thoroughly disproved. He arrived in Braintree, with his family, in 1639.

Edward married Margaret Elliott on 18 Sep 1623 in Redenhall with Harleston, Norfolk, England. Margaret (daughter of John Elliott and (Unknown first wife of John Elliott)) died in 1640 in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Richard married Alice Blower on 6 Jan 1634 in St. Katherine by the Tower, London, England. Notes:

He arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 on the Defence, along with his wife Elizabeth and his children Francis, Elizabeth, Marie, and John. At the time of his emigration he was a servant to Roger Harlakenden (b. 1611).

Said to have been the first representative of Billerica to the General Court in 1666.

William married Elizabeth before 1623. Elizabeth died on 31 Mar 1668 in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 39.  Elizabeth died on 31 Mar 1668 in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

It appears likely that her birth surname was Symes. From Meyerink (citation details below): "[W]hen Sarah Simes, unmarried, died testate in Cambridge, 10 June 1653, her will mentioned several prominent New Englanders, but she only described two of them as her brothers (which term often also meant brother-in-law or step-brother). She also arrived on the Defence in 1635, age 30, with the French family and also as a "servant" to Harlakenden. There is no reason not to believe that William French married Sarah's sister. Proof of such a relationship, or that Sarah had a sister Elizabeth, has not yet come to light. It is, however, interesting that William French bestowed the name Sarah on two of his daughters, both of whom lived to marry."

    Children:
    1. Sarah French was born in Mar 1638 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
    2. 19. Hannah French was born about 1643 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

In Watertown by 1 March 1631, when he was fined for selling "water of noe worth nor value" as a cure for scurvy. Since ships never crossed the Atlantic during winter, he must have come no later than 1630.

According to Nicholas Knapp Genealogy, William Pelham and Edward Lockwood promised to pay Knapp's fine. On 7 Aug 1632 three of the five pounds were recorded as paid. On 6 Jul 1638 what remained of the fine was remitted and the suit dropped upon payment of costs because "the water had been found beneficial".

    Removed to Stamford 1646.

Nicholas married Elinor before 1631 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Elinor died on 16 Aug 1658 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Not to be confused with the Henry Smith who emigrated with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 and settled in Dorchester, later returning to England, whose wife was also named Ann.

Henry married (Unknown first wife of Henry Smith). (Unknown died before 21 Jan 1664. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  12. 51.  (Unknown first wife of Henry Smith) died before 21 Jan 1664.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Bef 30 Nov 1617, Long Stratton, Norfolk, England

Emigrated about 1638; settled successively at Southold, Huntington, and Jamaica (all on Long Island), and finally at Norwalk, Connecticut. Was twice a member of the Connecticut General Court. Town clerk, surveyor, and deacon of the church at Norwalk.

The identity of his wife has been the source of literally hundreds of years of genealogical confusion, but in fact she appears to have been his step-sister -- which is to say, her father was the second husband of his mother, meaning that they were no more related by blood than the average married couple.

The exact order of his early movements in New England, and the date and place of his marriage to Mary Bridgham, are still unsettled. Robert Benedict proposes the following:

    * Sailed in May 1637, with his stepsister Mary Bridgham, from Great Yarmouth, arriving in Boston about 20 Jun 1637.

    * In Salem by August 1637.

    * Married Mary Bridgham about 1639, probably at Salem.

Thomas married Mary Bridgham about 1639. Mary (daughter of John Bridgham and Grace) was born before 15 Nov 1618 in Morningthorpe, Norfolk, England; was christened on 15 Nov 1618 in Morningthorpe, Norfolk, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  14. 57.  Mary Bridgham was born before 15 Nov 1618 in Morningthorpe, Norfolk, England; was christened on 15 Nov 1618 in Morningthorpe, Norfolk, England (daughter of John Bridgham and Grace).

  15. 58.  Francis Andrews died between 6 Jun 1662 and 5 Mar 1663 in Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut.

    Notes:

First in Hartford in 1639, then in Fairfield.

"Francis may have been bro. of William of Hartford and John of Farmington. It is at least worthy of note that John (son of Francis) and Thomas (son of William) m. sisters, daus. of John Kirby of Middletown; while Thomas (son of Francis) and Abraham (son of John) also m. sisters, daus. of Robert Porter of Farmington." [Donald Lines Jacobus, citation details below]

Francis married Anne. Anne died in Jun 1685 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  16. 59.  Anne died in Jun 1685 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

    Notes:

Notwithstanding many claims to the contrary, she was not a daughter of Giles Smith who was in Hartford by 1639 and died in Fairfield in 1669.

Evidence that Anne, the widow of Francis Andrews, went on to be the second wife of Dr. Henry Smith:

    * Henry Smith and his second wife Anne had a prenuptual agreement that named three of her children by her previous husband, Rebecca, Ruth, and Abraham, names that correspond to the youngest, third youngest, and fourth youngest of the children of Francis and Anne Andrews.

    * The probate record of Francis Andrews calls his widow "Anna Smith".

    * On 14 Mar 1664, Anna, late wife of Francis, deceased, sold land to her son-in-law Simon Couch. In 1673, Couch stated that he had purchased this land from Ann Smith.

    Children:
    1. 29. Rebecca Andrews
