He was the founder of a tannery in Norwich operated by several generations of Elwyns, including his son Thomas.

In 2012, Richard L. Bush (citation details below) argued that this William Elwyn was the son of another William Elwyn who lived from about 1510 to before 1570, himself the son of Peter Elwyn of Wood Dalling who died between 16 Jun 1556 and 27 Sep 1557 and Peter's wife Lucy who predeceased him, this Peter being a son of John Elwyn of Wood Dalling and his wife Katherine Bulwer. But in 2016, Clifford L. Stott (citation details below) argued convincingly that Bush's evidence for this paternity was insufficient.
