    Notes:

"Samuel and Sarah Marshfield of Springfield, Mass., known to be brother and sister, have generally been placed by probability as children of Thomas Marshfield of Windsor. No guardianship appointments are found for them, but they would have had no inherited property in this country if the insolvent Thomas was their father, and they may have been indentured to Windsor families by the Selectmen. Notes:

The magisterial and fastidious Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton (citation details below) is certain that this Samuel Bush was the father of Ebenezer Bush who was born 24 Jul 1687, and certain that this Samuel Bush's wife was Mary Goodenow, daughter of Capt. John Goodenow, but considers it only probable ("almost surely") that this Samuel Bush was a son of John and Elizabeth Bush.

Samuel married Mary Goodenow about 1 May 1677. Mary (daughter of Capt. John Goodenow and Mary Axtell) was born on 19 Oct 1659 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died on 2 Aug 1687 in Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Torrey identifies the woman married by Samuel Bush "(?1642-1733)" in or by 1677 as "Mary GOODWIN (-1687), dau. John", although one of his citations is James Cox Brady and His Ancestry (citation details below), which gives the Goodenow model presented here. We are opting for the Goodenow model based on its development in volume 3 of The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908 (1996-2004), citation details below.

    Notes:

Emigrated in 1634 on the Regard of Barnstaple. First in Dorchester, then Windsor by 1637. Departed Windsor by 1647 and perhaps by 1643; perhaps moved to Springfield, where his wife and children resided, and perhaps died there.

Deputy (as "Tho Marshall") for Windsor to the Connecticut general court, 8 Mar 1638 and 5 Apr 1638.

    Steven M. Lawson:

With a corrected reading of Winthrop's Journal [ref. TAG 74:225], Thomas is identified as arriving from Barnstable, Devonshire aboard the 'Regard' in 1634. The revised entry for Nov. 13, 1634 is:

The Regard, a ship of Barnstable, of about two hundred tons, arrived with twenty passengers and about fifty cattle.

One thing I think fit to observe, as a witness of God's providence for this plantation. There came in this ship one Marisfeild, a poor godly man of Exeter, being very desirous to come to us, but not able to transport his family. There was in the city a rich merchant, one Marshall, who being troubled in his dreams about the said poor man, could not be quiet till he had sent for him and given him £50, and lent him £100, willing him withal, that, if he wanted, he should send to him for more. This Marsfeild grew suddenly rich, and then lost his godliness, and his wealth soon after.

Thomas settled at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT by 1637, and was living there in 1642 when he sold some of his land. On Oct. 14, 1642, Thomas was relieved of his entire estate to pay debts incurred, probably from a shipping venture begun in 1640 with Henry WOLCOTT, Samuel WAKEMAN and the WYLLYS family [TAG 74:127]. In late 1642, he is said to have "withdrawn" from Windsor, and may have died then. No further record is found and Savage states "Perhaps he was lost at sea."

Thomas married Mercy. Mercy died before 30 Sep 1654 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; was buried on 30 Sep 1654 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 35.  Mercy died before 30 Sep 1654 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; was buried on 30 Sep 1654 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Steven M. Lawson:

In 1649, as the "widow Marshfield," she resided at Springfield, MA, being previously from Windsor, CT, and having three children -- including one married daughter. She was accused of being a witch, and brought court action against Mary Parsons for making a false accusation. Mary was sentenced to be whipped, and to pay £3 to Goody Marshfield "or and towards the reparation of her good name."

    ——

The "Mary Parsons" mentioned above was the wife of Hugh Parsons.

    Children:
    1. 17. Sarah Marshfield was born in 1633; was christened on 25 Aug 1633 in St. Mary Arches, Exeter, Devon, England; died on 9 Mar 1709 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

  3. 38.  John Leonard was born about 1615; died in 20 Feb 1676 - 24 Feb 1676 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Killed by Indians during King Philip's War.

"The English origin of John Leonard has not been ascertained, and if related to James Leonard of Taunton, Mass., nothing has been found to indicate it." [Hale, House and Related Families]

From a Wikitree page about John Leonard:

"He was an early settler of the town of Springfield, MA [...] He was chosen surveyor, 26 March 1640, to see that the highways were cleared and kept in repair. He was one of the town appraisers in 1645 [...]

"He was killed by Indians in Springfield 21 February 1675/766 during King Philip's War. 'He was killed by an Indian arrow while crossing the Agawam River to go to the assistance of relatives.'

"He was living in Springfield in 1636. He is not mentioned in The Great Migration Begins. He had 15 children. He is the progenitor of the Springfield Leonard line. No relationship is known to the James Leonard line, although they apparently communicated and knew each other. The Springfield Leonard line is followed in the Giles Memorial Genealogical Memoirs by John Adams Vinton (Boston: Dutton, 1864), pp. 280-316. The early generations are also covered in thorough fashion by Donald Lines Jacobus in Hale, House, and Related Families, Mainly of the Connecticut River Valley."

  4. 39.  Sarah Heald died on 23 Nov 1711 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Possibly named Sarah Heath.

"[Sarah Heald's] origin is likewise unknown, and since no Heald family was early settled at Springfield, she may have been brought there as a relative or as an indentured servant. It should be noted that in the next generation Gershom Hale or Heald, son of John Heald of Concord, settled in Springfield, and Sarah may have been Gershom's aunt and sister of John." [Hale, House and Related Families]

    Children:
    1. 19. Sarah Leonard was born on 13 Dec 1645 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; died on 20 Mar 1676 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

  5. 48.  John Bush was born about 1626; died on 1 Jan 1663 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Husbandman; never became a freeman. First seen in New England records in 1650.

John married Elizabeth about 1651. Elizabeth was born about 1631; died on 4 May 1705 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 49.  Elizabeth was born about 1631; died on 4 May 1705 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
    Children:

  7. 50.  Capt. John Goodenow was born about 1635 in England (son of Capt. Edmund Goodenow and Anne); died on 6 Aug 1721 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1634, England

    Notes:

Emigrated as an infant, with his family. Town clerk of Sudbury. "It was probably he who was engaged by the town in 1652 to beat the drum every Sabbath twice, also also for service on lecture day." [James Cox Brady and His Ancestry, citation details below.]

Former Sudbury town historian George Don Max, quoted on the Goodenow Family Association site:

Some years ago I was reading the diaries of the Rev. Mr. Israel Loring. His entry for Aug. 6, 1721 reads; "Dyed Capt. John Goodenow. I was with him on Saturday, the day before he Dyed. Told me then, that he was like a Pelecan in the Wilderness, and an Owl in the Desert. And pray'd that God would humble him down to Hell, but not throw him in there." The reference is Psalms 102:6, which is a "prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before the Lord."

John Goodenow's plaintive plea calls out for the reason for its utterance. I sought the answer in the Sudbury town tecords wherein I traced his career of service to the town. Finally the records revealed a set of circumstances, which still did not resolve the question. In 1699 John Goodenow was elected to the offices of Selectman, Town Clerk, and Assessor; he had filled these positions several times earlier. In 1701 his name does not appear as a holder of a Town Office. In 1702 and 1703 he served as Highway Surveyor and was appointed to a committee to survey and locate a new road; likewise in 1704 he was a committee member to "seat the meeting house." At a town meeting held Feb. 4, 1704, the Town proceeded to elect him Selectman, Town Clerk, and Assessor; a resumption to those positions of power so suddenly interrupted in 1699.

Immediately following his reelection the Town held a Special Meeting on the 31st of March, 1704. The Warrant reads in part: "...Then & There to chuse a Town Clerk & an assessor and a selectman by reason of Capt. John Goodenow Modestly Refuesing in the time of it and dos still continue his Reselution in the Matter for Reasons best known to himself; And allsoe from the advise of our own Respective Justive Brown...and the Town being met chuse John Brigham Selectman, Richard Moore Town Clerk, and Noah Clap Assesser."

From the record and upon reflection it appeared to me that while John Goodenow's public life was seemingly irreproachable, his private condition had to be examined. Subsequently while in Cambridge at the Middlesex County Probate Court searching out Sudbury Wills and Deeds, I decided to look for John Goodenow in the files of the Middlesex Courts. Here was the answer to the mystery of his fall. What I discovered was substantially what Roger Thompson also found and later reported in his fascinating study, Sex in Middlesex; Popular Mores in a Massachusetts County, 1649-1699, published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 1986.

In short, John Goodenow was accused of misuse of power by means of his offices; he was slick at horse trading, drank too much and was brought up before the Church to answer to it; was infrequent at church and when not there enjoyed the company of Hannah Brooks, the wife of John Brooks, with whom he had carried on an adulterous affair for some years. His offences, both moral and civil, had become a public outrage and an embarrassment to the town. Accordingly, Mr. Joseph Noyes, and others in town and some outside of it took Capt. Goodenow to Court in May 1699. Here was a situation that even they could not brook! He escaped prosecution by paying court costs and resigning from his town offices. His misdeeds and years were heavy upon him for the remaining days of his life. This is why in 1721 at the very door of death he beseeched God to "to humble him down to hell, but not to throw him in there."
